Top Self-Care Tips To Try Today

Daily life can get very busy. We forget to slow down and focus on ourselves. When you think about self-care your mind usually goes to bubble baths, face masks and manicures. Although these can be a part of self-care there are a lot of other ways to look after your body and mind. We have compiled a few top tips below for you to try.

Drink Plenty Of Water

We all know the recommended amount of water to drink each day is 2.7 – 3.7 liters. However, if you are not in the habit of drinking this amount every day it can be hard to keep on top of it. So instead think about points in your day that you can associate with drinking water. For example, as soon as you wake up drink one tall glass. That’s already half a liter into your daily amount! Then, try and have a glass or two with each meal. In no time you will find you are hitting your target without even trying. You will also start to see the benefits of what hydrating does to your body. Your skin will start to feel more clear, dark circles around the eyes will reduce and you will feel great overall.

Have A Health Check

Self-care is all about being healthy and happy in your body, so if you have been ignoring any aches and pains it’s time to head to your doctor for a health check. It is important that we check out these symptoms just in case, as finding a solution early on is always better than letting it fester and get worse. You should also look after your eye care by getting regular eye tests and upgrading your prescription if needed. Now your body and eyes have been checked over the only thing left is your dental care. Whether you need to get a toothache looked at or visit an invisalign dentist to straighten up your teeth, these are all self-care acts to practice.

Try New Hobbies

Sometimes the best way to practice self-care is by doing something for yourself. If you have always wanted to try a new hobby then why not start one today? Whether it’s yoga, pottery, acting classes or flower arranging, having a weekly class to escape reality and tap into a new skill can really help your mental health and ground you.

Take Time To Reflect On The Day

Life can get stressful. So taking time each day to debrief and come back to earth can really help. Spend five minutes to just sit with your thoughts and reflect, make a note of all the good things that have happened that day and what you can improve on in the future. If you are feeling particularly stressed incorporate a bit of meditation, focusing on your breathing can bring down your stress levels and make you feel calmer.

A Full Day of Self-Care

Self-care is all about doing the things that bring you joy and make you feel good. Especially in times of stress, incorporating little pockets in your day to treat yourself with love can prove even more important. These moments of pleasure don’t have to be particularly elaborate and they certainly don’t have to break the bank!

I recommend breaking down your typical day into a few parts and then brainstorming ways you could honor your own needs and heart in each of them. (You know what they say, you gotta put your own oxygen mask on first!) Here are a few ideas for a full day of self-care —

Good Morning

Start your day with care and calm…

Face Wash ($13)

Cleansing with a product that makes your skin feel baby-butt soft is such a delightful way to kick off the day.

Multivitamin ($34)

Your health is an important part of self-care!

Cup o’ Joe ($10)

A beautiful mug is the best way to imbibe that morning caffeine fix, in my humble opinion.

Mellow Music

Even if you don’t have time to quietly sit and meditate and journal, playing soothing music for 30 minutes of emails and administrative work is a zen way to start your work day.

Afternoon Care

Bypass the midday slump…

Balanced Breath ($10)

Starting to panic that all your to-dos won’t get done? Take a moment to breathe! Bonus: this stuff smells incredible.

Yoga Wheel ($30)

The perfect way to stretch out a back that’s hunched over a computer all day.

Energy Ball

Afternoon sleepies can usually be solved with a healthy and delicious snack.

Candle ($32)

A ritual of shutting down and clearing away work materials and then “turning on” your at-home vibe with a candle is an easy way to switch your brain into relaxation mode.

Bedtime Delight

Set yourself up for sweet dreams…

Yoga Mat ($25)

Kick off your bedtime routine with some light exercise and start winding down for the night.

Bath Soak ($18)

Soaking in the tub will help your muscles relax after a long day.

Oil Diffuser ($28)

Now it’s time to prepare your sleeping sanctuary! Many oils can produce the calming effect needed to lull you right to sleep.

Salt Lamp ($12)

For a soft glow in the evening that really produces mellow vibes, fire up a salt lamp or two.

Good Book

Finally, give yourself the gift of no screens for AT LEAST 30 minutes before you close those peepers. Curl up with a book instead.

P.S. 6 Reasons You Should Be Sleeping More

My Recipe for Self-Love

What you’ll need:

  1. SOLITUDE – Spending quality time alone is one of the number one ways we get to know ourselves. And you gotta know yourself before you can even think about loving yourself. When you’re away from the “busy” of everyday life and the external influences that shape you, you can express yourself however you like. So get creative!
  2. AFFIRMATION – When we repeat positive, encouraging messages to ourselves it can change the way that we feel. Toxic thoughts are bound to crop up — no matter who you are! So why not actively try to negate some of that negativity?
  3. INTENTION SETTING – If we never set a target, who is to blame when we miss the mark? Write down your intention for tomorrow, speak your intentions out loud, share your goals with loved ones. Clarifying what we want to achieve not only sets us up for success, but honors our path as something that is important and achievable.

And how it all comes together:

-Schedule some time for SOLITUDE. Spend this time getting to know yourself by brainstorming what you love about yourself in the present and what you’d like to improve on or accomplish in the future. You may want to write in a journal or meditate during this process.

-Begin a regular AFFIRMATION practice. Need help getting in the swing of things? Try a daily mirror affirmation for the next 7 days or check out my 30 day mantra challenge. Remember those things you love about yourself in the present? Start telling yourself.

-Now set yourself up for future successes, and new areas to affirm, by SETTING INTENTIONS. Start writing out a daily intention for the following day before you go to sleep at night. Not only will you sleep better, but you’ll start prioritizing based on your own needs and dreams. Self-love (with a dash of productivity) at it’s finest!

Want to go even bigger? Identify 3 intentions for the year to come. Write them out and post somewhere you’ll see every day. A constant reminder that your goals matter and are possible.
