Wedding: Arts Place

Now I’d love to show you our wedding venue! It was important to me to have a personal connection to the space where we would wed. I totally believe this is possible without constricting your venue search to churches. (Church weddings are awesome, too! We just found that widening our scope allowed us to find a place that was right for us.) We were thrilled to find we could book Arts Place, a beautiful historic building in downtown Lexington. As I mentioned in this post, Arts Place was a very important part of my childhood. It felt right to return to for this special occasion.

We had the run of the building for the day, and, between the art-filled walls, sun-soaked lighting, and memories of my childhood around every corner, it was everything I had hoped for and more.

We used the gallery to serve food and set up our ceremony and dining tables in the Performance Hall. Fun fact: Arts Place was a YMCA in the early 1900’s and the Performance Hall was the gym! That’s why there’s a track running along the top. It may sound strange, but the track was a huge selling point for me on this space. Those big windows letting in natural light? A bird’s eye view of everything below. Ummm, yes please!

breauxmanceGR_0136[1]

Don’t you love the blue paper hearts in the windows? Totally a happy coincidence!

We also loved that our venue was in the heart of Downtown Lexington. We were just a few block’s walk from other cool historic buildings, the big blue building (<- Lexington landmark!), the Lexington Farmer’s Market, Gratz Park, our favorite downtown bars, and some groovy murals. Location, location, location!

To top it off, Arts Place houses Lexington Ballet just a floor above the gallery and our ceremony space. So, we were able to use my old ballet studios (!) to get ready and have our first look. I’ll admit, I may have had more butterflies than I did before my first Nutcracker rehearsal. But having my mom twist my hair into a chignon in front of a mirror I first remember gazing into at five years old, well that was pretty spectacular and surreal.

Next, I’ll share about a few DIYs and decor details, I can’t wait! See you then.

Wedding: Rehearsal Picnic

daybeforebreauxmance_0295[1]

After an absolutely perfect bridal luncheon earlier in the day, the fun continued into the evening with our rehearsal picnic. What to do about our rehearsal dinner was a decision we left until the very end. I couldn’t quite make up my mind. Should we rent out a room at a restaurant? Practice at our venue and then send our friends on their way while we shared an intimate meal with just our families? In the end, we chose to rent out a shelter at a local park, serve tacos, and invite friends and family alike to share a picnic table (or two). I loved the simple and relaxed tone.

We covered the tables in colorful Dollar Tree tablecloths and my mom (who honestly doesn’t believe in a party without favors) set out decks of cards, fans, and other festive trinkets. We pulled up lawn chairs, chatted about wedding set-up strategy, played a few boisterous rounds of Thirteen, and my brother even took his discs out for a spin.

After everyone arrived, we dug into the build-your-own taco bar provided by Moe’s catering. Highly recommend! Moe’s will send someone to set everything up for you and it’s SO affordable. Definitely a no fuss option when your mind is spinning with a list of Wedding Day To-Do’s.

With our bellies full we took to the field to rehearse our ceremony. Our dear friend Ben acted as our officiant and he spent the evening making sure every detail of our script was perfect and ready to go for the following day. We had everything mapped out in no time!

Because our friend Carrie is the sweetest wedding photographer in the world, we ran off with her into the meadow to take a few “AAAH! We’re getting married tomorrow!” photos. I’m so glad we did. After a year of living in Miami, it was crazy to me how GREEN everything looked in Lexington. Kentucky is beautiful, y’all!

So glad we set aside some time to frolic with our friends and family in the great outdoors! We loved having our tribe all together the night before such an important day. Tomorrow, I’ll post about our wedding venue. xoxo

Have any big plans for the holiday weekend? I recently nabbed an extra part-time job (no rest for the wicked!) and have opted to work for the majority of the time. However, I’ve been reading this book, which has inspired me to want to pick up a copy of Vogue and leaf through the pages by the pool. If only this tropical storm would get out the way!!! In the mean time, I’m excited to share more details of our wedding weekend. Back tomorrow with the rehearsal picnic! Stay tuned. Now onto some links…

Pretty much as soon as our wedding’s location and date were set my dearest friend Katie asked if she could throw me a little bridal get-together. That’s just the type of person she is– ride-or-die ’til the end, generous, and ready to make folks feel special at the drop of a (tiny) hat. I obviously agreed to whatever she had in store. She knocked it out of the park with a Bridal Luncheon (other options included brunch–too early, and high tea–not really a thing in central Kentucky lol).

We met up at Azur Restaurant and Patio along with my mom, sister, sister-in-law and a few beautiful friends (including my bestie Chad who chivalrously wore a pink shirt to mark the occasion). Katie made sure there was a chilled bottle of Rosé waiting at the table along with an adorable “Bride” chalkboard sign on my chair. We all donned tiny hats(!), toasted, and had a delicious lunch. I had the buffalo fried chicken cobb salad…yum!

While a random rainstorm rolled through as we arrived at the restaurant (I was terrified our outdoor rehearsal picnic, scheduled for later in the day, would be rained out), the sun popped back out by the end of our feast and we were able to take a few photos on the patio.

Thank you so much, Katie! You made me feel so incredibly special and all the laughter from this luncheon will resonate with me for years to come.

(My dress is from Stitch Fix. Tiny hats and chalkboard sign are from Hobby Lobby.)

breauxmancecocktail_0956[1]

Chet and I received our wedding photos last week (squeeee!) and we are over the moon with them! Starting tomorrow, I’ll be sharing a series of posts featuring some of our favorites as well as recounting details from the weekend. I’m so excited to share! We couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day and I genuinely can’t wait to re-live it all in blog form. Haha! I hope you’ll check back over the coming weeks.

Until tomorrow…

On the rooftop of the world.

into thin air

I have a confession to make. For several years, I’ve harbored the weirdest obsession…Mt Everest. I will literally read, watch, or listen to ANYTHING I can get my hands on about this mountain and people’s attempts to summit it. The Discovery Channel show Everest: Beyond the Limit is totally a top 10 TV moment for me. (And I’m like the QUEEN of obscure reality TV programming.) I’ll also venture down the rabbit hole about other Himalayan peaks and press play on a documentary about K2 faster than you can say “acclimatization.” I even OWN an anthropology textbook about sherpas. What is my life?

This is all to say that I can’t believe it took me so long to read Jon Krakauer’s book Into Thin Air! I’ve read a lot of articles and seen multiple documentaries about the tragic 1996 Everest climbing season but this book was a fascinating, in-depth look at the chain of unfortunate events that occurred.

I finished it yesterday and then proceeded to get lost in a web of Wikipedia and news articles from the late 90’s.

The obsession continues, you guys.

P.S. This movie is also about what went down in ’96.

Let’s talk personality (tests)…

thinking statue

Have you ever taken a personality test, like the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument or the Myers-Briggs Personality Test?

I thought it would be fun to take a few and see how the results stack up. Would the description of my type be spot-on or just general enough to be applied to anyone. Here’s what I found out…

Keirsey Personality Type

Result: The Rationals

Rationals are abstract and objective thinkers that seek knowledge. You strive to learn as many subjects as possible and you have an incredible knack for strategic thinking. You’re most likely tech savvy, down to earth, and very reliable. As a rational, you also excel in any kind of logical investigation. This makes you perfect for anything that involves a deep level of thinking or strategizing. You either tend to be an attentive mastermind and use your intelligence for coordinating people and things or you’re a true architect at heart with incredible intellectual potential.

My thoughts: This result definitely speaks to how many random interests I have (sometimes to my detriment…just PICK something!) and my need to get to the bottom of things. I’m definitely not tech savvy, as much as I want to be, but I do think I’m reliable and good at coordinating people. However, this short description doesn’t mention the result of all this thinking and strategizing. I’m not a thinker for thinking’s sake, more problem-solver than philosopher.

Myers-Briggs

Result: INFJ-T (“The Advocate”)

Advocates indeed share a very unique combination of traits: though soft-spoken, they have very strong opinions and will fight tirelessly for an idea they believe in. They are decisive and strong-willed, but will rarely use that energy for personal gain – Advocates will act with creativity, imagination, conviction and sensitivity not to create advantage, but to create balance. Egalitarianism and karma are very attractive ideas to Advocates, and they tend to believe that nothing would help the world so much as using love and compassion to soften the hearts of tyrants.

Advocates find it easy to make connections with others, and have a talent for warm, sensitive language, speaking in human terms, rather than with pure logic and fact. It makes sense that their friends and colleagues will come to think of them as quiet Extroverted types, but they would all do well to remember that Advocates need time alone to decompress and recharge, and to not become too alarmed when they suddenly withdraw. Advocates take great care of other’s feelings, and they expect the favor to be returned – sometimes that means giving them the space they need for a few days.

My thoughts: Above is just a small excerpt from a rather exhaustive break-down of this type. My Myers-Briggs type absolutely rings true for me. I am totally someone who comes across as a quiet Extroverted type but inside I’m an introvert through and through. This result speaks to my adaptability in social situations but a preference to exercise influence from behind the scenes. (Busted!) This result also notes,  “INFJs regard problems as opportunities to design and implement creative solutions.”

Hartman Personality Profile

Result: Red – Lifeblood of Humanity

Reds are motivated by Power. They seek productivity and need to look good to others. Simply stated, reds want their own way. They like to be in the driver’s seat and willingly pay the price to be in a leadership role. Reds value whatever gets them ahead in life, whether it be in their careers, school endeavors, or personal life. What reds value, they get done. They are often workaholics. They will, however, resist doing anything that doesn’t interest them.

Reds like to be right. They value approval from others for their intelligence and practical approach to life, and want to be respected for it. Reds are confident, proactive, and visionary; and but can also be arrogant, selfish, and insensitive.

My thoughts: My main confusion with these results stem from the fact that you’re supposed to answer the questions for this assessment based on yourself as a child. Therefore, the results I got seem a lot more true of my kid-life–bossy, unconcerned with others, practical. Maybe most people change less between childhood and adulthood but I only found these results to be partly true. However, I WAS interested to see that this part – “resists doing anything that doesn’t interest them” – reiterates what I discovered about being a Questioner.

All in all, I’d say there were some interesting points to glean from all three of these personality tests. If you need a little distraction today, and want to see if these assessments have you PEGGED, then WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!

Go find out your personality type.

What’s new in your world? Inspired by our recent foray into “local park as personal backyard,” we nabbed a sun-shield from Amazon. Let’s go to the park!

IMG_2400

Over the weekend, Chet and I decided to head to the park for a little outdoor excursion. We wanted to play around with our cameras, soak up some sun, and get a little exercise. Here are a few photos we captured, if you’d like to see…

There are so many parks in Miami and all of them are beautifully maintained. This one is just a few blocks away from us in a sweet little neighborhood adjacent to our condo complex. To reach the park entrance you have to cross the cutest bridge overlooking a canal and there are always tons of giant lizards and plenty of ducks.

Oh Miami, you make me sweat more than I thought possible and your traffic is atrocious but I sure do love your pretty plants.

Do you have an outdoor space you consider an extension of your home? What do you like to bring along on park adventures? Cameras? A soccer ball? Tiny bottles of wine (*wink, wink*)?
