mid-week round-up

back alley

What are you up to this week? Our wedding invitations are starting to show up in folk’s mailboxes and I’ve been giddily checking our online RSVP’s with WAY too much frequency. We also booked our tickets to Lexington last night. I’m really excited that I’ll be in Kentucky so soon! I opted to fly in earlier then Chet (he has to teach a summer class) so I can take care of all the last minute planning…as well as drink daily Ale-8’s and buy copious amounts of my favorite treats from Good Foods Co-op. Hope you’re all doing well and have some fun plans for this week. In the mean time, here are a dozen links for you to peruse…

Girl Crush: Amy Poehler

It seems everyone and their mom has picked up Amy Poehler’s new book Yes Please as their kick off read of 2015. With a load of books ahead of this one in my personal queue, I still couldn’t help myself…I cracked it open to check out the first few pages and then couldn’t put it down. Now I’m even more in love with Amy Poehler than I was after watching Parks and Rec. While Amy is clearly hilarious and there are laugh out loud moments of honesty, I actually found myself tearing up during several passages. Her descriptions of friendships and creating things together just take me to a place. Plus, it’s a great behind the scenes look at Upright Citizens Brigade, SNL, Parks and Recreation and all those awards show bits orchestrated by Poehler.

If you haven’t yet, definitely give this book a read. But you’ve been warned, you might get a little bummed that you’re not BFF’s with Amy Poehler…yet.

Plus, isn’t this so wonderfully true? Such a good reminder–

“Great people do things before they’re ready. They do things before they know they can do it. Doing what you’re afraid of, getting out of your comfort zone, taking risks like that- that’s what life is. You might be really good. You might find out something about yourself that’s really special and if you’re not good, who cares? You tried something. Now you know something about yourself.”

P.S. Girl Crush: Sarah Koenig

Girl Crush: Sarah Koenig

I’ve been a long-time lover of This American Life but recently my girl crush on staff producer Sarah Koenig has been through the roof! A few weeks ago, TAL aired an episode that also served as the first episode for a spin-off podcast called Serial. I was immediately hooked. Sarah’s poignant journalism and writing is unparalleled. Over the course of the season, Serial is unfolding just one non-fiction story–in this case, a story about a murder and high school sweethearts and a man’s claimed innocence. Basically, a tale you want to tune in for.  And they promise to keep telling the story until they “get to the bottom of it”.

This is all to say, I’m completely obsessed with Sarah Koenig. I want to be her. If you haven’t checked out Serial yet you totally should. No one could tell this story like her.

P.S. Here are some of Ms. Koenig’s best-loved This American Life episodes and one of my favorite episodes that I still talk about all the time.
