About Beth Berger

Hi there! Finding Delight is a lifestyle and lifelong learning blog written and curated by me in Alabama. Along the way, I attempt to tackle the rough real world with books, budget-livin', brainpower and all the beautiful stuff you can find when you really look. Won't you join me? The true delight is in the finding out.

If you liked Room by Emma Donaghue…

if you liked room read when we were romans

…I recommend you find yourself a copy of When We Were Romans by Matthew Kneale. I just finished Kneale’s haunting psychological novel and, just like Room, couldn’t put it down the whole way through.

Both books are narrated by young boys; complete with grammatical errors, run-on sentences, and innocent outlooks on the dangerous world. Kneale’s narrator, Lawrence, is a nine year old boy who would do anything for his mother and little sister, Jemima. The family moves to Rome to escape an estranged father, a man Lawrence’s mother believes has been spying on them. But as their world grows increasingly closed off beyond the confines of their little family unit, you realize something isn’t quite right.

A lot of my friends loved Room and with the popular movie version, I figure a whole new audience is gaining an appreciation for Donoghue’s book. I thought it might be worth mentioning When We Were Romans as a fantastic follow-up read. (Of course, if you’ve never read either…then I recommend a trip to the library to grab ’em both!) Happy reading!

Are you a word nerd?

word nerd

I recently started following the Twitter account @HaggardHawks and I can’t get enough. They tweet old and unusual words, language facts, and a daily Word of the Day. Here are a few random nuggets of knowledge I’ve learned as a result…

  1. A nooklet is a little nook or corner. i.e. The most adorable sounding place to send your toddler for Time Out.
  2. In 17th century English, balderdash was a mixture of beer and buttermilk. Now I can win the board game of the same name with all my useless knowledge!
  3. The word hoverboard was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in September 2015. But still not added to my LIFE.
  4. The place a hibernating animal hibernates is called its hibernaclei.e. How I will be referring to my bed until Spring.
  5. Increasing the size of a typeface by one point means increasing it by precisely 1/72nd of an inchYour professor will neeeeever notice.
  6. paraphernalia was originally all of a woman’s possessions that didn’t automatically become her husband’s property after marriage. i.e. What I will yell at Chet when he tries to use my stuff once we’re wed…”Get out of my PARAPHERNALIA, babe!”
  7. Straughty-squinty is an old Scots dialect word describing a route that is intermittently straight and then winding. I know a few folks’ life paths which could be described as such as well.
  8. “Butter upon bacon” was 19th century slang for needless extravagance. i.e. The Paleo Diet.
  9. In 17th century English, a piss-prophet was a doctor who diagnosed diseases by examining patients’ urine. i.e. Me, when my pee is crystal clear; “Wow, I am the MOST healthy today.”
  10. The Inuit word iritajangajut means ‘hands that appear wrinkled because they’ve been immersed in water too long’. I prefer “prune fingers” but I’ll give this new one a go…it sounds a lot less creepy.

If you hear me busting out any words like these at a future dinner party you’ll totally know my secret. Haha! Hop on over to Twitter and give Haggard Hawks a follow if you want a fun and informative bit of word nerdiness to look forward to as you scroll through your feed! November Stitch Fix (Unboxing + Try On)

IMG_1604

IMG_1607

Tuesday morning I received a package on my door-step from Stitch Fix. It’s been a while since I’ve used their services, and I’ve never documented it on the blog, so I thought it was high time for a little clothing extravaganza! You see, Stitch Fix is an amazing online company which basically provides you with your own personal stylist. It’s pretty simple! First, you sign up on their website and fill out a style profile. It asks you questions about what you like to wear and your lifestyle to get a clearer picture of the type of clothing you would enjoy receiving. You can also include a link to one of your Pinterest boards for your stylist to peruse. Next, you schedule a “fix” and leave a comment with any special requests or upcoming occasions. And then WAM-BAM, in a few weeks you have a package with five unique items, hand-picked by your own stylist. You also receive a style card for each of your five pieces with two outfit ideas. This is a neat way of showing you how you can incorporate the pieces into your own wardrobe.

For this November Fix, I told my stylist that I recently moved to Miami and was looking for some Autumnal pieces without going the whole cardigan and heavy knits route. I also mentioned I would love to receive a dress option for a wedding I’m headed to later this month. So, wanna see what I got?

1. Market & Spruce knit top with cut out detail.

3. Papermoon blouse with lace detail and tab sleeves.

3. Zad metal cuff with gold, rose gold, and silver.

4. Mavi knit top with cowl neck and zip detail.

5. Papermoon dress.

Now comes the fun part! Deciding what to keep and what to send back. Your box comes equipped with a pre-stamped bag/envelope so you can send back what doesn’t work for you at no extra charge! However, if you keep all 5 items you receive a 25% discount off your total bill. You have three days to make your selections. I like to have a rifle through my closet, jewelry box, and shoe collection to try and come up with full outfits for each piece. This is my way of sussing out if I’ll actually wear the item or not. Here’s what I came up with…

What do we think, my loves? All the shirts hit the “Fall in Florida” mark spot on! I can style them with more autumnal accessories but they’re lightweight enough that I won’t die of heatstroke in the process. I’m not certain how often I would ACTUALLY wear the bracelet but I do appreciate that it’s mixed metals, meaning it would tie everything together when I’m wearing silver and gold jewelry at the same time. The dress is the real kicker though. The cut is super flattering and I think it’s a perfect pick for a New Orleans wedding…but there’s a little rip in the fabric! GAH! I know the rip/hole will get bigger each time I wear (and wash) it and it feels wrong to buy something I know I’ll get limited wear out of due to that damage. I contacted Stitch Fix to see what they can do so *fingers crossed*! But I’m curious, what do YOU think I should keep?

If you’d like to give Stitch Fix a go, and I SOOO recommend you do, CLICK HERE. It’s nice to have an option for cute clothes that doesn’t involve schlepping to a million stores! AND if you already know you’re expecting a package, is a great way to curb a bunch of “fast fashion” impulse spending.

mid-week round-up

green house

Hope everyone had a fun Halloween! Did you do anything spooky? Dress up in a costume? We ventured down to Homestead and enjoyed an afternoon walking along Biscayne Bay and laying out by the beach. Then we headed home for a chili dinner and “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” Despite my best door decorating efforts, we didn’t get any Trick-or-Treaters. WOMP-womp. But I think Chet’s students appreciated our candy surplus on Monday! ; ) Now I’ve got a busy few days of work and preparation ahead of me because this time next week I’ll be on my way to New Orleans! Woohoo! Enjoy your Wednesday and a few links…

Recipe: Dairy-free Crepes

Pancakes 1

So, these are sort of a cross between a more European style pancake and a good ol’ fashioned American pancake. They have a more neutral taste so the toppings shine but they’re still gonna fill you up. As a result, I’d say this is a stick-to-your-ribs sort of meal….but in the daintiest way possible. ; ) You’ll only need a couple. However, if you’re like me and you can never really own up to your pancakes limits, you might gobble down a few (too many) more. This recipe uses almond milk and oil (I used vegetable oil here but coconut oil works nicely, too) to stay dairy-free. You can also use gluten-free flour if that’s your jam. And if you want to up the protein on ’em, sub in some protein powder for a quarter of the flour. Perfect weekend brunch feast or breakfast for dinner fare. Or if you work from home like me, you can whip them up for lunch in the middle of the day and enjoy a nice break from the grind!

What you’ll need…

– 2 cups flour

– 1 tsp vanilla extract

– 1 1/2 cups almond milk

– 3 Tbsps oil

– 1 tsp baking powder

– 4 eggs

– cooking spray to coat pan

Pancakes 2

and how it all comes together…

– Mix flour and baking soda together in a mixing bowl.

– Add your eggs and then slowly stir in the milk.

– Add oil and vanilla extract and blend with a mixer or immersion blender until mixture becomes a thin consistency.

– Grease your pan and heat to medium high. Add your batter in 1/4 cup at a time and allow to cook for about 4 minutes before flipping.

– This will make around 10 pancakes. If you want to keep everything warm to serve all at once, pre-heat your oven to 200 degrees and place pancakes on a wire rack over a baking sheet as they come off the pan.

– Top with fresh fruit, Greek yogurt, pure maple syrup, or whatever you like best!

Do you ever make pancakes? What’s your favorite topping? Do you make them on a cast-iron skillet? If so, I’m JEALOUS!

October favorites.

October favorites

With the turning of the calendar page from October to November, it’s time to bundle together the best products, places, media and everything in between from the last month. Here are 9 things I found myself loving in October…

1. Logitech speakers

My home workspace got even MORE swag this month with the addition of a set of white speakers to flank my monitor. I saw them featured in someone else’s computer set-up online and knew they would be perfect sitting atop my desk! Luckily, Chet was able to do a little Internet digging to track them down and gave them to me as a birthday present. I totally forgot to include them in my gift haul! Probably because they were plugged in and I’ve already grown so accustomed to having them as part of my computer. Their sound quality is fantastic and they match the rest of my desk so well!

2. Sharpie pens

I’ve loved the glory of the Sharpie pen for quite some time but I grew to love them even stronger this past month. Working from home means I’ve got to keep a running “To Do” list with all my tasks for the day. I wouldn’t get anything done otherwise. It’s all about the list! And it’s way more fun in colorful Sharpie pens. Some days I can even go full cray-cray and color code! I’ve also been working my way through a self-paced class on blogging for business and these pens are perfect for taking notes and brainstorming sessions.

3. Bamboo toothbrushes

In an effort to look for little replacements I could make to cut down on my use of plastic, I ordered this set of bamboo toothbrushes. Since you’re supposed to switch out your toothbrush every three months, I’ll be good to go for a whole year! And each toothbrush in the set is cleverly stamped with three months to make sure you don’t forget! So far I’m a fan and actually like them more than many plastic counterparts I’ve tried.

4. Homestead Bayfront Park

So, I keep bringing this park/beach up on the blog but I can’t help it! It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite places in the world! We visited twice this month (for my birthday and just this past weekend on Halloween, as well) and both times were so rejuvenating and fun. You can lay by the beach, swim in the atoll pool, watch the boats leave the marina, fish, enjoy a picnic, have dinner and drinks at La Playa Grill, or just wander about the park taking in the gorgeous views. If you drop down to Miami for a visit we promise to take you here! On our Halloween excursion to Homestead we also checked out Biscayne National Park (which is right next door to the Bayfront Park) and took a beautiful walk with views of downtown Miami in the distance across the water.

5. The Martian

This movie is definitely a must-see! In the midst of a Mars mission, a bad storm causes an astronaut crew to pack it in early and head home to Earth. However, one crew member is presumed dead and left behind. But he actually survived (!) and now he must get by with meager supplies, his own scientific-smarts and the help of a team of scientists at NASA millions of miles away. In the leading role Matt Damon is ridiculous and lovable and all the other characters are pitch perfect as well. The plot is, of course, gripping as is the case with most space exploration movies. It’s based on a bestselling hard sci-fi novel but the movie adaptation was definitely created with the masses in mind. I’m sure you’ll love it even if you aren’t a die hard science fiction fan.

6. Ring dish

I just can’t get over how cute this little dish is! This was a birthday present from Chet’s mom and it’s the sweetest little place to keep my jewelry and bobby pins at the end of the day. Polka dots? White and gold? French phrasing? I think I’m in love! This has taken up permanent residence on my dresser.

7. SubZero ice cream

Can we TALK about this ice cream for a second? OH MY WORD is it good! I thought I was spoiled in Lexington living so close to the fro-yo shop Orange Leaf but having SubZero up the street has it beat. The concept for this ice cream shop was pitched on the show Shark Tank and I’m so glad someone was like “Um, yeah. Of COURSE I’ll back this!” Basically your ice cream starts out in liquid form. You get to select your milk (you can even choose lactose free or almond–which is awesome for those of us whose tummies aren’t as accepting of dairy), flavors and mix-ins and then everything is mixed and frozen right in front of you with the help of dry ice. The result? The creamiest, richest ice cream you’ll ever taste! I recommend Nutella flavor. Yum!

8. Fargo

I recently put out a call on Facebook for binge-worthy TV recommendations. While we got a lot of great suggestions we decided to give Fargo a go. Well, just a few weeks later and now I’m jonesing for that second season. This show is SO. GOOD. The plot of the show is different from the movie while still capturing that Coen Brothers vibe of dark-funny-weird. It’s the first show in quite some time that really made me want to watch more than two episodes a night. Keep hittin’ that next button, please!

9. Moscow Mule cup

After months and months of wistfully picking up every Moscow Mule mug found in every store EVER, Chet said “enough is enough with all those copper-induced googly eyes!” and bought me one of my very own! Is he not the best at picking out presents?! *swoon* My cocktail of choice is gin and ginger ale which isn’t exactly a Moscow Mule but still feels very right served in a copper cup. Bonus, drinks stay super cold in this cup which is kind of a necessity when you live at the veeeeery Southern tip of the good ol’ U.S. of A.

Kentucky Kicks Ass: Books to read if you love the Commonwealth.

kentucky horse

I love Kentucky. I’m proud to be from The Bluegrass State and was lucky enough to “hang my hat” there for so many years. Now that I’ve moved further South, I’ve been considering the ways in which people connect to a sense of home. Whether it be through a special meal or a well-worn family heirloom, we all maintain tethers to those places we hold most important. Today, I thought it would be fun to explore a few literary connections to my home state. If you, like me, have a soft spot for thoroughbreds, college basketball, bourbon, and all the beautiful scenery between Paducah and Pikeville; then these books are for you. Some are written by Kentucky authors. Some explore Kentucky through setting and characters. Whether you currently call Kentucky home or look fondly upon the time that you once did, here are 5 books to read if you love the Commonwealth:

the coal tattoo

The Coal Tattoo by Silas House

Mining the storytelling tradition of Appalachia, House tells the story of two very different sisters. Lovingly constructed characters, a deep understanding of mountain folk’s religiosity, and strong imagery coalesce  to create a tale about what brings people together and tears them apart. A gripping read.

night rider

Night Rider by Robert Penn Warren

This is Robert Penn Warren’s first novel and details the tobacco wars which once plagued the state of Kentucky. A classic Southern tale featuring a main character who will do anything to set himself apart in the outbreak of violence.

the memory keepers daughter

The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards

Set in Kentucky and spanning one family’s journey over a quarter of a century, this book is dramatic and captivating and mysterious. Playing out the resulting years after a father makes a split-second decision, it’s plot makes for a story that’s hard to put down.

appalachian elegy

Appalachian Elegy by bell hooks

This book of poetry is inspired by hooks’ childhood in the hollows and hills of Kentucky. She expertly touches on matters both political and confessional, painting a truthful portrait of life in Appalachia narrated by someone grappling with the slow loss of this very identity.

coal miners daughter

Coal Miner’s Daughter by Loretta Lynn with George Vecsey

Don’t ya just love a good rags to riches tale? They always make me think of this cartoon — safely covering both ends of the spectrum! This one tells the story of country music star Loretta Lynn. Covering her early life in Butcher Holler, KY and her rise to fame, we learn the paths she took to become a prolific songwriter and an influential woman in the music industry.

P.S. No brainer: You should also pick up anything ever by Wendell Berry and give it a read! You may also want to read Players First by John Calipari to prove how blue you bleed. Or, if you can get your hands on a copy, Pauline’s by Pauline Tabor, a memoir about a famous madam who managed a brothel in Bowling Green, is AMAZING. Speaking of…if you have MY copy of Pauline’s, I WANT IT BACK!

Now it’s your turn! From Kentucky or call the Commonwealth home? What books do you think fellow Kentuckians should pick up? Not a Kentucky guy or gal? What books connect you to YOUR home?! I’d love to hear!

In need of a pep talk?

hands making a heart

The ladies at Babe Vibes have got you covered. Designed by Kara Haupt and developed by Paige Lewis, The Pep Talk Generator is a completely genius project of encouragement. I recommend you go ahead and bookmark this page right now! I’ll wait.

Wouldn’t you love to visit the site when you’re feeling lonely or a project seems too big to finish or a down-in-the-dumps black cloud is hovering right over top of your head? What sort of uplifting words could the generator have in store for you? Perhaps this…

“From one grown woman to another, in the face of a challenge you can either break down or break open. When we allow ourselves to break open and let ourselves be immersed by our emotions, we can truly be honest with ourselves and evolve in the most positive and healthiest way. One of the nice things about growing up is being able to say no, to change your mind, and to become brave enough to show who you are even if it hurts. The self-awareness and self-love you grant yourself can be your saving grace; they might help you reacquaint yourself with the courage you forgot you had all along.” –Shaya Ishaq

❤ or ❤

“Wow, you are gorgeous! You are powerful. No one else can do what you do. You don’t need approval from those around you to know how irreplaceable you are — you just need yourself. Today, remind yourself that you can do anything… because you can.” –Lyndsay Wright

❤ or ❤

“You know what, babe? Sometimes, life gets really weird. You think you have your shit on lock and you’re cruising to your own song but then the song changes and you’re left trying to take steps in the dark. This will happen to you at the worst of times and you’ll grapple with what you want and maybe even who you are! And babe, that’s okay. The movement will shift you into a better position to become the self you seek to be. Just remember to be patient and hold on to the best parts, surround yourself in good things and let the song change. Maybe it was just time for a new tune.” –Kelsie McNair

…is just what you need to hear. And the best part, in my opinion, is that each quote is attributed to a lovely lady with a link to her ~website or blog or instagram or twitter~ so you can put a face and a personality to their sweet words. They’re just regular people who’ve no doubt been through some shit too or have had equally tough moments to the one you can’t seem to shake.

Maybe this site seems a bit fortune cookie-ish and sappy to some of you out there. But if not, I think it’s a great opportunity for you to incorporate a little bit of self-love and affirmations into your every day routine. Even when you’re not necessarily feeling all doom and gloom. Check the site, reflect on whatever words appear, and think about ways to use or grow from them. 5 minutes. That’s all it takes. And really, who couldn’t use a daily pep talk?!

P.S. My pep talk to YOUI think you’re pretty neat. I think you’re extremely creative. Things might seem like they’re falling apart all around you right now but isn’t that a wonderful opportunity to build something even better and stronger? Today you chose to get out of bed and live in this world and that was extremely brave. Visit the mirror like you’re visiting an old friend. Make a goofy face, sing Beyonce lyrics, whisper your love through truths and inside jokes. Keep creating. The end product may not be entirely what you had in mind but the process behind the result means you MADE something today and that’s more than most can say. In fact, you’re the only person living and breathing in this very moment to have made what you made. Listen for inspiration in the voices of those around you. And when you can’t quite hear it? Read your own words aloud. I am so proud of you.

If you could give a pep talk to someone struggling today, what would you say?

mid-week round-up

How is everyone doing this week? This past weekend Chet and I saw “The Martian”–a total must-see! The forecast called for lots of rain, so we planned accordingly, even though it never seemed to materialize more than a sprinkle. We had hoped for a trip to the beach but a movie theater date and a productive Sunday of errands and cleaning I GUESS is a close second, haha! Fingers crossed for good weather THIS weekend. Meanwhile, we’ll be watching spooky movies and chowing down on the Halloween cupcakes we baked. Hope your days leading up to Saturday’s holiday are festive and (purposefully) frightful, and here are some links for you to enjoy in the mean time…

In the words of Ms. Hepburn…

me by katharine hepburn

I recently finished reading Me: Stories of My Life by Katharine Hepburn, a unique autobiography complete with tell-all history and distinguishable voice. Hepburn shares her life story in quick bursts of remembrance, beginning with her childhood in Hartford. She then recounts her college years and theater beginnings followed by the early Hollywood screen tests which would catapult her to film fame and then legacy. All the while, she shares details about her famous relationships with men, including her 27 year affair with Spencer Tracy.

If you’re a fan of her films, I recommend giving this autobiography a read. The book revisits nearly every movie she was in, from casting to premiere, and the inside peek at the woman behind the talent makes watching them again all the more enjoyable. She was a fascinating firecracker. Here are a few of her insights in her own words…

On her mother – “the greatest gift she gave us was freedom to be noisy, to yell. No nags. Do it? Yes, do it! And tell me about it.”

On young love – “I took one look at him and I was stricken with whatever it is that strickens one at once and for no reason when one looks at a member of the opposite sex.”

On looking at reviews – “I never look at notices. So they don’t exist. Or at movies that I have made. They don’t exist. My past sins, so to speak.”

On helping others – “If you are going to help anybody who is in trouble, this is not a two-hour-a-day job. It is a twenty-four-hour-a-day job. You won’t do anything else if you decide that you are going to resurrect and rearrange a human being.”

On the power of thought – “You’ve got to dream up everything. I believe in miracles. I believe that here we are and we can be in severe physical trouble. But if our spirits aren’t in severe physical trouble, then we can rise up out of it. That’s what we’ve got that the animals really haven’t got.”

On being wrong – “He was not afraid to be wrong. That is a terrible disease.”

On growing old – “Heard a funny thing the other day. Someone asked someone who was about my age: “How are you?”

Answer: “Fine. If you don’t ask for the details.”

That’s about it. Isn’t it?”

On the meaning of love – LOVE has nothing to do with what you are expecting to get — only with what you are expecting to give–which is everything. What you will receive in return varies. But it really has no connection with what you give. You give because you love and you cannot help giving.”

On Spencer’s acting – “Who was he? I never really knew. He had locked the door to the inside room…I only suspected that inside that room was a powerful engine which ran twenty-four hours a day at full speed. It turned out some remarkable people–yes–all those different people.”

On Spencer’s death – “He looked so happy to be done with living, which for all his accomplishments had been a frightful burden to him. So quiet. He who had turned and turned in that bed. No one able to help him really. One builds one’s own jail.”

katharine hepburn

As soon as I finished the book, I consulted my friend (and resident Hepburn expert), Ben, on what movies I should watch now that I’m a full-fledged fan! I’ve watched a few Katharine movies with Ben over the years; A Bill of Divorcement, Bringing Up Baby, Stage Door–but the book really made me want to watch more! He suggested The Lion in Winter, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner (Spencer Tracy’s last film), The Glass Menagerie, and The Philadelphia Story. Looks like I’ll be busy!!!

P.S. Now I’m reading Tina Fey’s Bossypants and it’s so interesting to see how things have changed (and HAVEN’T) for women in the entertainment industry. The overwhelming similarity between the two women?

They refuse to be someone they’re not simply because there are men in the room.

Are you a Katharine Hepburn fan? What’s your favorite of her films? Have you read her autobiography? Would you? I think you’d be surprised how much you can hear her throughout the book.
