Repetitive eating.

repetive eating

I’m fascinated by stories about repetitive eating. Like the dude who ate Chipotle at least once per day for nearly 200 days. Or the guy who ate pretty much nothing but Olive Garden for seven straight weeks (and enjoyed it!). I’m all for a good food ritual — like going to the same spot for brunch every Saturday morning or always cooking up spaghetti on Thursday evenings. I even ordered a bagel sandwich for dinner pretty much every Monday night for probably close to a year. But some people just take it to the extreme…and their stories make me curious. What restaurant would you willingly eat 100 meals at over the course of 100 days? Is there a fast food chain you would return to every day for a whole month?! I think I could make it work at one of those non-chain Mexican restaurants but anything else would be tough. And I ESPECIALLY don’t think I could stomach fast food for an extended period of time.

Kinda makes you want to eat IN tonight, doesn’t it?

Make a ZERO COST fabric pumpkin in minutes!

Now that we live in Miami, seasons are sort of a thing of the past. When I peak out the window the October sunlight tricks me into thinking it’s gonna be downright balmy outside. No dice! Still in the upper 80’s and humid as heck. While this is certainly a plus for relaxing at the beach when everyone else in the country is bundled into three layers for tailgating, it can be a little difficult to get into the holiday spirit. With Halloween just around the corner, we wanted our apartment to feel appropriately autumnal. (And I really want Trick-or-Treaters to show up at the door!) One fun way of achieving this look ended up being too awesome NOT to share. Mainly because this particular decoration was made from items I had on hand AND took me less than 60 seconds to make. That beats purchasing some cheap, plastic knick-knack I’m gonna have to store OR WORSE…one that ends up in a landfill.

I’ll wager a guess that you have the necessary items to get started! Gather up whatever scarves, dish towels, or fabric you think would make a pretty pumpkin……

…..and a handy roll of good ol’ T.P.

Wrap a scarf or a piece of fabric around a roll of toilet paper to give it a bit more GIRTH.

IMG_1557

Wrap the desired exterior fabric around the roll vertically. If your fabric is quite thin you can thread it through the hole until you’re all the way around. Or, like I’ve done below, you can simply tuck the fabric in section by section on both sides.

IMG_1558

Once all the fabric is tucked and the whole thing is covered, just fluff and fiddle with the folds until you’ve reached your desired effect.

Admittedly, a cool looking stick from your yard would make the BEST stem for your pumpkin. (You could even paint it!) But those type of trees don’t really grow here so I took an alternative route — one that fully embraces my pumpkin’s past life.

IMG_1559

Yes, that’s right…more gifts from the T.P. gods. #TrashToTreasures

Now find a little home for your brand new pumpkin!

IMG_1556

IMG_1549

Make one or a ton. Stack two rolls on top of each other to make a tall pumpkin or add more center fabric to make a fat one! The possibilities are endless!!! And the best part? Once the season is over, you can take your little creations apart, tucking the materials back in their proper place and putting them to new use. Pretty cool!

P.S. I’m also a fan of these foam decorations (packs away flat when stored off-season) and a well-placed window cling for some spookiness. I may have gone a little crazy with the pumpkins. Oh well! *shrugs* One girl’s freshmen year dorm door dec is another girl’s first attempt at a tropical autumn.

Why I love the library.

library with ladder

On Monday, I finally got around to signing up for a library card at the Kendall Branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library. I have a long-standing love affair with libraries. While this means I racked up some pretty hefty fines back in the day (before I learned how to be an adult and do adult things, you know how that goes), I’ve always been a voracious reader so the attraction to libraries was sort of a no-brainer. Walking out of a library with a good haul is like Christmas morning! Bonus: All your presents are FREE!

When I was living and working in Bowling Green, poor as heck, one of my favorite weekly rituals was going to the library. It was located just down the block and I would go by myself, meandering the rows, loading my arms down with enough books and DVD’s to last me the week. Any enticing cover art or gripping back-cover synopsis would be indulged and added to my stack. And why not? When you’re literally planning a meal of spaghetti for the sixth time in a month and can’t afford to put gas in your car…you gotta find joy in life’s little pleasures.  I’ll always associate libraries with self-care.  Oh, and of course life-long learning, too! You can borrow a book, but you get to keep the ideas.

When a book shows up on my door-step from Amazon, I’m excited, sure; but the feeling of taking a book home from the library is for me–unparalleled.

Here’s a look at what I picked up on this inaugural visit to the library in Miami…

Bossypants by Tina Fey – STILL haven’t read this book. (I know!) I LOVED Amy Poehler’s book so I thought it was high time to check this one off the reading list, too.

Shortcomings by Adrian Tomine – I read about this graphic novel a few years ago (the author illustrates for the New Yorker) so when I spotted it from across the aisle I knew it needed to come home with me.

Are you a huge library fan like me? What are you reading these days? I wish we could tack an extra hour onto each day to make time for reading!

mid-week round-up

How’s your week going so far??? The weather here has been so pleasant lately but eerily windy! Perfect conditions for putting up some Halloween decorations around the apartment. On Sunday, it finally felt cool enough to pack up a blanket and a picnic and spend the afternoon at the park across the street from us. The weather wasn’t the only thing on point at the park. The people watching was amazing! All the shelters were occupied with large birthday parties; complete with decorations, music, and bounce houses. Miami-folk take their celebrations seriously! Anywho, enjoy the rest of your week and here are a few things worth reading…

Watching “Friends” re-runs will make you feel like a dinosaur.

Further proof that the easiest way to save money on food is to learn how to cook…

…and when you do, who knows, maybe you can turn your skills into a side hustle!

Are you a bath person?

bathtub 1

Are you a bath person or a shower person? I’ve always preferred showers. I tend to think of baths as soaking in my own filth. (Is that gross? It’s not that I’m THAT dirty…but still.) When we moved into our new apartment I was super stoked to see a stand alone shower in the en suite bathroom…and not one of those mega tiny, glass door showers either. It’s not cramped at all! And I love that it’s made of white tiles– a new decor obsession of mine. So, I guess you could say I’m a shower girl. HOWEVER! These tubs could cause me to change my tune. Aren’t they pretty? Maybe if I could shower FIRST, I would hop in for a luxuriously long soak! Complete with candles and a novel of course. Which would YOU choose?

A Very Beach-y Birthday!

IMG_1456

Hope you had a great weekend! Here are a few pictures from when we celebrated my birthday (LAST weekend), if you’re interested. Above is the view out to sea from Homestead Bayfront Park, my new favorite place on the planet!

IMG_1453

We drove down to this little gem first thing on my birthday celebration day. (I was sipping on a tumbler of hot coffee when we first set up camp on the little beach.) The park features a marina, tons of fishing spots, picnic places galore, and an atoll pool with a sandy beach. We spent the morning and early afternoon soaking up some sun and floating in the restorative salt water.

crossroads

I love the park’s quirky features, like this colorful sign (It’s all so close!!) and the decorated lifeguard huts.

bayfront view

It’s the perfect place to spend a whole day–I can’t wait to go back again and again! (Maybe with a penny board or some fishing poles…) And you can’t argue with views like this one.

la playa grill menu

After we had our fill of beach lounging, we dusted off our sandy limbs and headed up to La Playa Grill, which overlooks the atoll pool and the ocean beyond. We ordered up a couple coronas…

fish and chips

and I munched on this AMAZING order of Fish and Chips (with tropical cole slaw!). Chet had a Playa Burger which he said was one of the best burgers he’s ever had! Full and happy we left Homestead and headed back to Miami to run a few errands and prepare for the next fantastic meal my birthday had in store for us!

crawfish potato

A few weeks prior, I jokingly requested Crawfish Etouffee Potatoes for my birthday meal knowing full well we wouldn’t be able to find crawfish in Miami. But lo and behold! Crawfish showed up at our front door just in time! Chet had them shipped (in a styrofoam cooler packed with dry ice) from Louisiana. You might remember my love affair with this particular dish began on my birthday last year! It is the thing that dreams are made of.

birthday cake

We rounded out the celebrations with Nutella birthday cake and a glass of Pinot Grigio. I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day or a better way to ring in my 30th year.

P.S. I can’t resist giving you a peak at the WONDERFUL presents I received! Aren’t they glorious?! I am the luckiest! (The book “When We Were Romans” and the docu “Surfwise” were presents to myself because #treatyoself.)

P.S. 50 facts on my birthday and Chet’s birthday (when HE surprised ME!).

Cooking up a taste of home.

cooking up a taste of home

The emotional power of food has long been of interest to me. You can learn so much about a person by seeing what comes out of their home kitchens. And even more watching what meals they turn to time and time again, what they cook to celebrate moments of triumph, the dishes they serve to ease a loved one’s heart break, food that feels comforting and comfortable. Certain tastes can cultivate memories, happy AND sad, traveling you through time and feelings and emotions until you reach home. Whatever home may mean to you.

Today, I’ve asked four ladies I admire to tell us about the meals they make to connect with their own feelings of home. Here’s what they had to say…

sheryl ravioli

“My dish is a Shiitake Marscapone Ravioli served with a savory sweet potato mash with pesto drizzle.  Raviolis really take me to my happy place.  Early on my Mom, Nana and Aunts would slave over making traditional raviolis for family gatherings.  I remember how labor intensive they were and coming from a large Italian American family there was no such thing as a small batch.  In an effort to get the same home made feeling without spending an entire day in the kitchen I discovered this fabulous recipe and tweaked it to suit my needs and level of laziness:).  My grandmother has influenced me as a home cook in so many ways, she has taught me to be innovative and versatile in the kitchen.  She has also ingrained a zero waste mentality (long before it was trendy) as she survived the great depression, among other hardships.  Growing up in the greater Boston area my heritage is considered a badge of honor, however I’ve come to love my life here in Lexington, KY and would wholeheartedly claim Kentucky as my home.” – Sheryl H.L.  (If you’re in the area, I HIGHLY recommend you visit Sheryl at Broomwagon, a bike and coffee shop in Lexington that frequently offers dishes with unique tastes of home.)

ashley sausage and cabbage

“Cabbage and smoked sausage, cooked with bacon grease and (hopefully) some sweet cornbread on the side. It reminds me of home; I remember my mom whipping up this quick, tasty, filling meal many a night throughout my childhood and even today when I cook it I think of her. This meal brings back memories of my dad too–it was the last meal I saw him eat before he passed away 15 years ago. Every time I eat it, I think of my family, my childhood…my home. I now live in Madison, Wisconsin, but am a Kentucky girl born and bred! I’m from Hodgenville–LaRue County for all my fellow Kentuckians.” Ashley L.

Katie buttermilk chicken

You would never know it from looking at me now, but growing up I played A LOT of sports. Swimming, tennis, cross county- you name it and I did it. I was always on the go and I was always STARVING. This unfortunately left my mother with the ridiculously extensive task of feeding me… as well as my three brothers. Needless to say, things had to get creative and foods had to be heavy. Growing up in Kentucky it wasn’t hard to find those “heavy” recipes, the recipes that contained more calories than most people eat in an entire week. Now that all of my brothers and myself are adults (ish) my mother wouldn’t go within 10 feet of these recipes but, these were the jackpot back in the day. The dish I have picked to share is Buttermilk Chicken. This particular food gives me the weirdest mix of “yum” and “ugh” feelings. My mom would make this for me after a long day of swim practices and I would come home, reeking of chlorine, and MOW DOWN at the kitchen table. So, “Yum” because it is delicious but “ugh” because I only remember getting it after several hours of exercise. Regardless of the “yum” and “ugh”, this meal brings back some great memories for me of home. When I was 15, going to bed with a full belly was pretty much all I needed. I currently live in Indianapolis, but this dish in particular reminds me that I will always consider Kentucky my home.” – Katie N.

carrie spaghetti

When I search my feelings for the food that stirs up a sense of “home” the most, it’s definitely your standard, common spaghetti. Nothing exotic or elaborate– just the typical combination of tomato sauce and noodles. (My ideal bowl comes with a bit more sauce than noodle and plenty of toppings.) Growing up, my idea of “home” was ever-changing. Moves, divorces, remarriages, and more divorces made it difficult for me to tie the emotion of home to any specific place. Instead, it’s the people in my life that have created home for me. For some years I lived with my dad in my late grandfather’s home. He worked incredibly hard as a concrete finisher and sometimes throwing Ragu onto some al dente noodles was the best he could do for dinner. Spaghetti was our favorite meal and now when I visit CA to see him and my younger siblings, it’s the only meal we can agree on. I offer to cook so that I can make it a bit more nutritious and fun. It makes me think of gathering around my grandfather’s dining table that likely hasn’t been cleared off for a meal since I last visited. I think of laughing with them and the pleasure of seeing everyone’s plate totally clean within 5 minutes and full again with a second serving in 6. In my current home it is also an almost weekly choice for a meal. This photo is of a bowl we made last night to bring us comfort after a long weekend of wedding photography. It’s delicious, nostalgic, and you really can’t do it wrong. That’s my favorite kind of comfort food!” Carrie G.

Thank you SO MUCH to these four wonderful women for sharing! I think you’re all fantastic and your meals sound like perfection on a plate (and give me ALL the feels).

Now I’d love to know, what foods connect YOU to a feeling of home? Is it a dish passed down through the generations? A simple meal that tastes remarkably like childhood summer vacations? Share below!

P.S. If you haven’t done so already, please consider answering a few questions over on my 2015 Reader Survey. Thanks!

Ballin’ on a Budget – Ditch the Friends Who Are Always “Makin’ it Rain”

Today, I’d like to start a new series on the blog! One that highlights easy strategies for BALLIN’ ON A BUDGET. Each month, I’m going to propose something for all of us to ditch in order to free up some line items on our budgets with values that can go to more practical expenditures like paying down on debt and saving for special occasions. Whether you’re actively pinching pennies or simply want to re-direct some of those pennies to better serve you, this series is for you! So, let’s get started…

ditch your makin it rain friends

We all have a few of those friends who spend to their heart’s content and, whether deliberately or not, encourage us to do the same. One major elimination you can make in your journey towards getting financially fit is to ditch the constantly “makin’ it rain” friends. Now I know this sounds harsh but it doesn’t mean you have to cut all friendships out of your life or that you have to forego a social life. It just means you need to examine your “little black book” with a fine tooth comb. Identify those social connections who are contagiously bad with money. Whether their expendable income is from their parent’s pocket book or their own doesn’t matter. Reflect on the last few times you socialized with them. Did it involve driving long distances or splitting expensive cab fare? Were you found in the midst of a never-ending rotation of buying rounds of cocktails made with top-shelf liquor? Check out your bank statement from the night. How much did that dinner bill ACTUALLY come to? Now, consider whether you can flip this friendship on it’s head, financially speaking, OR if you need to cut them out completely.

After analyzing your friendships and their corresponding relationship to your finances, what’s next? Here are four easy steps you can take over the next four weeks to help you take financial control of your social life…

Week 1. Make a list of everything you enjoy doing or would like to try that costs little to no money. Don’t worry if the list is super long…I’ll wait…..get it all down! Now, keep this list handy as a reference when looking for social outings or activities with friends, family, and neighbors. When choosing to meet up with a friend it can be easy to default to costly adventures, like dinner and drinks or catching a flick at a movie theater, that are seriously lacking in creativity. Most would gladly exchange these go-to’s for a free concert on the square or a game of scrabble at your kitchen table…you just have to be brave enough to make the suggestion. Establishing your list is the first step!

Week 2. Choose to have “the money” conversation. Conversing about money is a taboo. But shying away from the topic can hinder the ability to have realistic discussions with the folks who would gladly get in your corner and help you achieve your goals. Now, I certainly think these conversations have a time and a place. I don’t think you should be having them with any Joe Shmoe and I don’t think you should shout intimate financial details from the rooftops like how much you earn or how much debt you’re working on paying off. But I DO think there’s extreme value in speaking your goals out loud. Why are you trying to live your life with a ballin’ on a budget mindset? Is it to pay off your student loans? Is it to finally take that trip to Paris? Is it to save enough to establish an emergency fund? This week, tell a close friend your current short-term financial goal. At the least, you’ll have someone who understands why you don’t want to run around town makin’ it rain anymore. At the most, you’ll have someone to hold you accountable. And you never know, maybe they’re working towards a similar goal! You’ll never know unless you share.

recurring ritual with friends

Week 3. Commit to a recurring ritual with a friend or friends. If socializing is of importance to you but you’re also actively watching your wallet, it helps to think ahead. In my experience, the EASIEST way to do this is set up a ritual on YOUR terms. It can be so tempting to fit in a catch-up with a friend over a restaurant meal or a night out at a bar but if you carve out time for them in other ways, you’ll find the need for these money-draining experiences diminishes. This step is completely adaptable based on how much time you have available and your preferences. The important thing is figuring out what’s going to bring you and your friends happiness with out spending a ton of money. This is the week to figure it out and lock them in! Your ritual can be as simple as gathering a few pals one night a week to watch a movie or as elaborate as planning a monthly pot-luck picnic at the local park (complete with field games!). Maybe you and a pal want to be running buddies on Tuesday and Thursday mornings? Maybe you extend an open invitation for anyone to stop by your house for Mario Kart on Saturday afternoons? Maybe you gather your best and brightest lady-friends once a month to talk about a book or knit or practice French. You don’t need to lay down a bunch of cash to bring joy to your life and make lasting memories with your friends.

Week 4. Say no! While it’s awesome to be armed with an arsenal of low-cost socializing ideas, there are still times when we just CAN’T be in control. You’ll no doubt still receive invitations for more expensive outings and events. So, start strategizing your action plan. How can you turn down these opportunities with grace? Now, I get it. FOMO (fear of missing out) starts to creep in. You get the feeling that if you say “no” one itty-bitty, little time you’ll never get asked to do anything EVER again!!! I think the best way to combat this is with honesty. Tell whomever extended the invite what circumstances are causing you to pass on this particular opportunity. Would you have to pay for a sitter? Do you have a looming deadline? Did you just move making money a little tight for the month? Let them know. And then find a way to let them know you still value your friendship–whether that be inviting them to the next occurrence of your recurring ritual (see above!) or sending a card or scheduling a phone date to hear all about what happened during the event you couldn’t attend. For this final week, your mantra is, “I can’t do it all. I can’t pay for it all. And that’s OK.”

Cute Date Night Idea: Starring General Tso’s Chicken?!

the search for general tso

If you’re looking for a cute date night idea, may I make a recommendation? How about the documentary, The Search for General Tso, enjoyed alongside a couple cartons of Chinese take-out! Who WAS General Tso, and why do we love eating his chicken so much? The film explores the origins and ubiquity of Chinese-American food through the story of the world’s most iconic sweet and spicy chicken dish. A dish you’ll want to shovel in your mouth as soon as that first frame rolls, I promise!

Now, you may be thinking, “Beth, isn’t this just the equivalent of #NetflixAndChill?” In a sense, yes. But this stay-in-for-the-night date has a THEME and themes require THOUGHT. Don’t let your adorable evenings with the one you love get reduced to a hashtag! Just think ahead, call up your local Chinese delivery restaurant, and place an order (or two) for some General Tso’s Chicken.

Instagramming a cute shot with your chopsticks is totally optional. #NetflixAndTso

Have fun, love birds!!!
