Testing the Amazing, Multi-Purpose Powers of Witch Hazel

img_2475

Lately, I’ve been having a love affair with Witch Hazel. It just feels so nice as a toner on a freshly cleaned face. I had tried it before but never really worked it into my daily routine. But now I’m feeling like a true convert. Have you ever used Witch Hazel as a toner?

Intrigued by the notion that there might be other uses for this magic elixir, I decided to do a little research. Turns out folks on the internet are claiming there’s not much Witch Hazel can’t do. And I’m super down to try out these ten…

  1. Facial Cleansing – Cleans skin pores and dries up excessive oil without totally drying out the skin. The ability to dry out blemish areas while still moisturizing sounds like a dream come true for my combination skin.
  2. Acne Treatment – Similar to how I use Witch Hazel as a toner, apply to problem areas with a cotton ball. How does it help? Witch Hazel has strong astringent and antioxidant properties because of a high tannin content.
  3. Under-eye Bag Relief – You know the ol’ beauty hack of hemorrhoid cream to tighten up the bagginess below your eyes? Know what’s an ingredient in stuff like Preparation H? Yep, Witch Hazel.
  4. Heal Bruises Faster – This one I gotta try since my legs are pretty much perpetually banged up.
  5. Treat Cuts or Scrapes – Witch Hazel can be used as a substitute for rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide when cleaning a wound.
  6. Soothe Sunburn – Thanks to anti-inflammatory properties, applying a washcloth soaked in Witch Hazel to a sunburn is a great way to lessen healing time. Plus, it can reduce peel-y, flaky skin down the road.
  7. Natural Deodorant – I’ve noticed Witch Hazel as a main ingredient in some of my favorite store-bought natural brands of deodorant but it never occurred to me to use it to make my own.
  8. Relieve Itchy Bug Bites – Again, Witch Hazel’s anti-inflammatory properties come to the rescue! Just apply a soaked cotton ball to the bite.
  9. Household Cleaner – I found a ton of recipes that incorporate Witch Hazel into cleaning solutions. Seems it’s great for bathrooms, chrome fixtures, mirrors, and even mopping floors!
  10. Jewelry Cleaner – And on it’s own, it can be used to gently clean jewelry.

Alright peeps…which of the ten are you itching to try?

P.S. Baking soda is similarly amazing with a million uses. Here’s how to use it as a face mask!

A Thanksgiving Menu for Under $50

vintage-cookbook-photo

If you’re only cooking for a few this Thanksgiving, and you’re not keen to blow your whole grocery budget on a single meal, I have a few tips for you…

  1. Choose 2-3 of your favorite side dishes. You won’t be “doing it wrong” if you don’t have green bean casserole or stuffing…especially if  you don’t like those dishes anyways.
  2. Don’t waste valuable stomach-space (and cash) on a bunch of pre-dinner nibbles.
  3. Pick up one decadent dessert from a local bakery. Unless you bake on the regular, the ingredient list for your favorite pie may not be worth the hassle.
  4. Consider roasting a chicken instead of a turkey. I know, I know…super unorthodox suggestion but when cooking for less people it just makes sense.

With these nuggets of knowledge in mind, I turned to one of my favorite cook books to construct a menu. Good and Cheap by Leanne Brown is an amazing resource for anyone ballin’ on a budget (no matter the time of year). AND it’s available as a FREE PDF. Go check it out!

Here’s a Thanksgiving meal for 4 folks (or 2 with a healthy dose of leftovers). While it may not be the most traditional of menus; the recipes are easy, the costs are low, and waste is minimal. I love that the spotlight is on seasonal produce…a wonderful bounty to celebrate at any table, but it feels especially appropriate for a Thanksgiving feast! Switch the chicken out for turkey (or a turkey breast), if you like. Or nab a Tofurkey if you’re vegetarian. (Cost of each dish is indicated below.)

Appetizer

Classic Deviled Eggs (p.137) $3.60

Starter

Lightly Curried Butternut Squash Soup (p.26) $6

Main Course

Roast Chicken (p.78) $10

Cauliflower Cheese (p.93) $6.60

Roasted Vegetables (p.106) $5

Whole-Wheat Jalapeno Cheddar Scones (p.15) $4.50 *note – I would sub diced apple for the jalapeno in this recipe to make it a bit more autumnal.

Dessert

Pumpkin Pie Rice Pudding (p.175) $2.40

Total cost of meal = $38.10 (which leaves you $11.90 to nab your favorite pie from some place local!).

Pick up a bottle of Cab and a bottle of Chardonnay and Bob’s your Uncle — budget-friendly Thanksgiving Day is a go!

What are YOUR top tips for saving money on Thanksgiving? Will you be hosting this year or enjoying dinner with friends and family? Would you ever consider CHICKEN on Turkey Day?! (Chet, a former butcher, swears up and down that no one actually likes turkey anyways. LOL! He prepared a delicious chicken last year and I gotta say…I’m now a fan of the Thanksgiving Chicken.)

Recipe: Cheesy Cauliflower

img_2421

In Florida, the passing seasons aren’t marked by changes I’ve grown accustomed to. (Plummeting temperatures! Sweaters! Dreary rain all day!) However, I still find myself hankering for the sorts of foods that would warm you up on a cold, Autumn evening. Hearty vegetables and ooey-gooey cheeses. Whack ’em in the oven casseroles that smell delicious and warm up your whole house. This dish, adapted from Leanne Brown’s cookbook Good and Cheap, certainly fits the bill. And since it uses cauliflower as a base, one could argue that it’s basically the healthy alternative to mac and cheese! I’m excited to whip this one up again in a few weeks as a Thanksgiving side.

What you’ll need:

1 head of cauliflower

1 Tbsp butter

3 cloves of garlic

1/2 tsp chili flakes

1 Tbsp flour

1 1/2 cups milk

6 oz sharp cheddar cheese, grated

salt and pepper

1 Tbsp Dijon mustard

1 tsp paprika

breadcrumbs (optional)

scallions (optional)

And how it all comes together:

– Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

– Bring a pot of water to boil over high heat and chop your cauliflower into florets. Once water has boiled, add the cauliflower florets and a pinch of salt and allow to boil for 4 minutes.

– Butter a small casserole or pie dish. Drain the cauliflower and add it to the buttered dish.

– Next, melt your butter in a saucepan on medium heat. Add garlic and chili flakes and cook for 1 minute. Add flour and stir quickly for about a minute to allow your roux to get a bit brown. Slowly add your milk as you continue to stir. (Note: You may need to add a bit more flour or a bit more milk to reach your desired consistency.)

– Bring the sauce to a boil, stirring every once and awhile to insure the bottom of the saucepan doesn’t get scorched.

– As soon as the sauce reaches a boil turn off the heat and stir in your cheese. Add your mustard, paprika, and scallions. (Note: This is a really great cheese sauce recipe to have in your wheelhouse! Add it to noodles for creamy mac and cheese or to scalloped potatoes or chopped winter squash.) I also chopped up a few slices of deli turkey that I wanted to use up and threw ’em into the mix. Add what you have on hand: leftover cooked ham, bits of crispy bacon, peas, salsa…the skies the limit! Or, leave the cauliflower to speak for itself.

– Give the sauce a taste and add salt and pepper as needed.

– Pour the cheese sauce over your cauliflower and add breadcrumbs to the top, if you like. Bake for 40 minutes or until the top is bubbly and brown! Enjoy as a main dish (great casserole or mac and cheese substitute) with a green salad or as a hearty vegetable side with a yummy roast dinner.

Recipe: Chocolate Zucchini Muffins

img_0828

I’ve been craving decadent dark chocolate desserts as of late. So, the other day, with an hour to spare in the late afternoon, and a rogue zucchini needing to be used in the name of pre-hurricane food clear-out, I baked up a batch of these chocolate zucchini muffins. The zucchini helps the muffins achieve cake-like moistness, while the oats justify eating these bad boys as a breakfast food. Delish!

This recipe is a great one to have in your wheelhouse. I love that it utilizes pantry staples I pretty much always have on hand. Then, you can customize based on what else is lying around/your tastes. Just switch out the cup of grated zucchini for any other moist addition (Think: over-ripe bananas, applesauce, canned pumpkin, mashed sweet potato, grated yellow squash, etc). Switch out dark chocolate morsels for any other mix-ins (Think: chopped walnuts or pecans, raisins, dried cranberries, white chocolate chips, etc). And switch out cinnamon for any other spice!

Pro-tip: Homemade muffins make a lovely gift. Just package in a box, tie it up with some twine or ribbon, and add a tag. Affordable and adorable!!

********

What you’ll need:

1 cup grated zucchini

3/4 cup flour

3/4 cup oats

1/4 cup cocoa powder

3/4 cup sugar

1/2 Tbsp cinnamon

1 tsp baking soda

2 eggs

1/2 cup plain yogurt

1/4 cup dark chocolate morsels

And how it all comes together:

– Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

– Grate one cup of zucchini.

– Line muffin tin (recipe makes 12 muffins) with muffin cups.

– Measure your dry ingredients into a bowl and stir to combine.

– Mix your yogurt, zucchini, and eggs into a separate bowl.  Then, add dry ingredients to wet and mix until batter consistency is achieved. Add dark chocolate morsels and stir once or twice.

– Fill each muffin cup about 3/4 of the way full with batter.

– Bake for 20 minutes.

– Allow your muffins to cool for about 20 minutes and then ENJOY!

How to Make a Pocket Letter with Cocoa Daisy!

IMG_2372

I reached out to Cocoa Daisy a few months ago in the height of my planning/pocket letter frenzy and they were generous enough to send me their August 2016 Planner Kit on the house. Once I opened the package I was absolutely blown away. You can see the full unboxing HERE, if you like.

Everything inside the kit was so gorgeous that, once I set up my planner for the month, I couldn’t wait to use extras to whip up a pocket letter for a lucky someone. And I’ve gotta say, I am SO happy with how this little guy turned out. Everything in the Cocoa Daisy kits coordinates so beautifully. This makes putting together a pocket letter super easy. But there’s no shortage of choices. Prints, paper, stickers, die-cuts, washi, clips, and embellishments are all in abundance.

Do you die?! Because I die. Excuse me while I stare at this creation for the next hour or so!

Oh! And of course I couldn’t forget goodies to tuck into the back of each pocket…

IMG_2377

Goodies from L – R

* Everything is from the kit unless otherwise specified.

  • divider tabs
  • sticky pad sample pages (from Target Dollar Spot) and To-Do banner stickers
  • puffy stickers
  • letter to recipient on a piece of coordinating stationery
  • planner stickers
  • washi samples (middle sample from Dollar Tree, bottom sample is Scotch brand from Office Depot)
  • Equal Exchange tea (Equal Exchange website)
  • 2 gift tags (from Ikea)
  • die-cuts

PL front and back

I wanted to utilize some of the great prints that came with the kit so I cut the two smallest options down to fit a pocket and kept their quotes as the focus. Two other pockets were cut from larger prints (the flower and the triangles) and two more came from a set of planner pages I didn’t end up using/ The black cardstock with diagonal stripes is from my own collection and I think it provides an interesting contrast. Everything else, except the small paperclips at the top, is from the kit!

Here are some details I love…

IMG_2378I love how well the Cocoa Daisy washi works with these other patterns I had in my collection.

And how cute is this GET IT DONE binder clip? The clips at the top help keep the goodies from falling out!

IMG_2379

IMG_2383

The kit made it super easy to layer lots of different elements. This pocket includes stickers and washi and EVERYTHING MATCHES. *heart eye emojis

And Lord, how I love a copper glitter tape…not to mention the sweet quote. Sigh. Cocoa Daisy you’ve really outdone yourself.

IMG_2380

Do you love this pocket letter as much as I do? I can’t wait to send it off to a special someone. I hope it brightens their day!

Thanks Cocoa Daisy!

My New Journal Approach

IMG_0589

Here’s the deal. I’ve never been a great historian of my own life. I admire the folks who keep detailed accounts of their days tucked away in composition notebooks and moleskines. What a gift to be transported back in time years later. However, try as I might, I’ve never been able to pick up this habit. (Blogging is the closest I’ve come!) I’d love to be able to look back at handwritten pages and recall dishes I ordered at restaurants and the songs I played on repeat for months at a time. I’d like to find sustainable ways to track my gratitude and personal triumphs.

So, what’s a girl who loves to start journals and abandon them three days later to do??? After a little reflection, I’ve landed on LISTS. I LOVE a list. I love to make them, I love to read them, I love to organize the random into neat little bullet points. Aha!

*Trumpet Sounds* Enter my new approach to journaling…THE LIST JOURNAL!

keeping a list journal

And what do you think my very first list shall be? If you guessed a list of lists then *ding, ding, ding* you nailed it! A list of lists I want to write in my list journal.

Here’s what I’ve come up with so far…

  • Books that have motivated or inspired me to make changes in my life.
  • My favorite topics of conversation.
  • Where we take visitors when they come to Miami.
  • All the acts of love that made up our beautiful wedding.
  • Standard packing list.
  • Every speech piece I ever competed with.
  • Weird things I did when I was super broke.
  • Reasons I love Wink.
  • Stuff that makes me feel better when I’m sick.
  • A running account of movies seen in the theater.
  • Favorite YouTube workouts.
  • Everything I’m thankful for on a given day.
  • Folks I’d like to send letters to on a more regular basis.
  • Chet’s masterfully prepared meals.
  • My most worn clothing in a given season.
  • Books I would recommend to someone who wants to read more.
  • The best seasons of The Real World. 🙂
  • Childhood memories that make me laugh.
  • Photos I want to frame and display.
  • People I admire.

My thought is that recording lists, along with the date, will give my future self a nice window into where I was in the world (physically, emotionally, AND mentally) at the time of composition. Or at least offer me an outlet to reflect on past events, articulate my gratitude, and mindfully create space for happiness. Wish me luck!

What do you think? Would you keep a list journal? Got any tips for being a better personal historian? I’d love to hear!! xoxo

P.S. My notebook system and how I prioritize my passions.

My Top 4 Healthy Lifestyle Intentions

my top 4

This post was inspired by BetterHelp.com which provides online therapy with licensed therapists.

I for one don’t feel like I need a new year to set new intentions, goals, or dreams. In fact, I kinda think summer is a great time re-commit to healthy living. The weather is warm and ready for outdoor exercise. The fruits and vegetables are fresh and plentiful. The daylight hours stretch for maximum productivity. The world feels full of possibilities…. making changes to your life feel possible.

With that in mind, I thought I’d share my top 4 intentions for healthy living, as well as how I’ve been applying these intentions in my every day life. If summer has you itching to set some new Healthy Lifestyle Intentions, then this post is FOR YOU!

IMG_1791

1. Make time for dedicated outdoor play every day.  I’m not talking about those moments of fresh air between house and car, car and work. I’m talking a dedicated half hour to soak up some Vitamin D. No need to reinvent the wheel. Just go for a walk or plant things in the dirt. Kick around a soccer ball or splash in the pool. If it’s raining, grab an umbrella and go for a stroll anyways. Or do some yoga under an awning. If it’s snowing, throw on your coat and boots and go for it. Just get outside!

My current favorite way of doubling down on this intention is taking all my phone calls outside. Phone rings…I head outside. But for my dedicated 30 minutes of play time, I’m a long-time lover of a casual walk or a quick dip in the pool. My living situation/climate makes both options super easy (year round!) and for that I am thankful.

Pictured above: A trail through Biscayne Bay National Park, the perfect place for an afternoon stroll.

IMG_1491

2. Keep healthy hacks on hand for the unhealthy foods you most often crave. I for one think that, if you love burgers/ice cream/pizza/burrito bowls/brownies, you can have your cake and eat it too. Just be honest with yourself about the things you love and LEAN IN. Prepare for those inevitable days when you’re feeling a Papa John’s delivery by always keeping a crust and some topping options in your kitchen. In doing so, you’ve just made it RUHL easy for yourself to get a pizza in the oven and in your belly. No phone dialing necessary. Once you’ve figured out the craving hacks that work for you, give the necessary ingredients a permanent place of honor on your weekly food shop list.

Lately, I’ve been loving banana soft serve as a replacement for my frequent need for fro-yo. I portion and freeze bananas so that I can pop them right into my food processor (usually with a scoop of frozen blueberries or some peanut butter) and have a delicious evening dessert in seconds.

Pictured above: My “fried” pickles, a hack for my very favorite restaurant appetizer.

IMG_1248

3. Take consistent breaks throughout your work day. Your work is a marathon not a sprint. There will always be another project, another email to answer, another meeting, another goal to cast your eyes upon. As this is the case, what’s the use in pounding the pavement so hard on one task that you’re too exhausted to give your all to the next? Give your brain space to breathe. Get your legs out from the confines of the underside of your desk and STRETCH. It may seem counter-intuitive at first but your productivity levels will thank you.

My approach to this intention is ever changing and has evolved and shifted along with my professional life. Currently, it centers around choosing priorities for the day and working to complete those top priorities first. This allows for larger breaks later in the day (a perk of working from home!). I also try to break those priorities down into 45 min – 1 hour long tasks and break for 10 – 15 minutes in between each task.

Pictured above: Cool drinks on my balcony, a great place for a break when you work from home.

IMG_1154

4. Schedule outings with friends and partners that are fun-focused, not food-focused. Yes, grabbing brunch is a great way to spend some quality time with your bestie. Dinner and drinks is a classic recipe for a great date with your boo. But they aren’t the only options. They’re the easy, no thought needed options. Why not plan a trip to the art museum with your gal pals or a bookstore adventure with your boyfriend? I’m not saying you should eliminate food-focused outings all together, just that switching it up can go a long way in getting you out of an eating-out holding pattern. Oh, and huge bonus points if you can plan something active and/or outdoors! Summer is the perfect time to make this switch.

Since moving to Miami, Chet and I instituted #AdventureSaturday. We check out new-to-us parks, head to the ocean, or just stroll around some shops. It’s a great way to spend time together and, because we are having experiences instead of meals, we make lasting memories.

Pictured above: Playing a video game at the arcade, one of our favorite outings.

Top 10 Yard Sale Advertising Tips

yard sale e-book

Hi guys! Now that spring has sprung in the US, you may have noticed signs start to pop up around your neighborhood. You may have even gotten the itch to wake up before dawn on a Saturday morning and follow their bold arrows like a treasure map. Where did these signs lead you? Why, to everyone’s favorite example of “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure” of course! The Yard Sale.

But what if you want to cash-in on this warm weather fun for yourself? What if you have a whole bunch of extra stuff weighing you down or are looking to raise some funds for an upcoming adventure?

Today I’ve partnered with YardSales.net to bring you a few handy-dandy tips to make sure you have a steady stream of folks at your next yard sale. Not just a sad trickle of passersby.

Back when I lived in Bowling Green, my friends and I often marked the arrival of Summer with a yard sale. We were broke-as-a-joke college kids looking to unload a few possessions before we, inevitably, packed up and moved from one terrible rental to another. Oh, and did I mention we were poor? Any extra cash to pay the light bill and treat ourselves to a pizza and a pitcher of beer was a God-send.

all diamonds Here’s a snap of one such yard sale with my friends Maggie, Chad, and Katie (I believe my friend Ashley is behind the camera). We called this yard sale “All Diamonds, No Rough.” (Old vacuum cleaners, a sled, and stacks of t-shirts? DIAMONDS, PEOPLE. DIAMONDS!!!)

While we usually ended up with a little extra cash at the end of these (desperate) money-making attempts, they never made us as rich as we hoped.

Wanna know where we went wrong? Impulsivity. Met with a combination of bored, broke, and scheme-filled brains…we’d decide, “Hey! Let’s have a yard sale!” and then proceed to stay up all night pricing items and throw them out in the lawn the next day. No forethought, not a lot of planning, a few haphazard signs and Craigslist ads scattered about the day of.

After checking out the e-book The Ultimate Guide to Hosting a Yard Sale, I now know where our hustle fell short. So, let’s all learn from my well-intentioned haphazard sales of the past! In case you’re planning a yard sale of your own, here are some tips from the book about HOW TO ADVERTISE

  1. RESEARCH. Before you start hanging up signs, do a little research about ordinances in your town or city which may prohibit you from doing so. Find out if a yard sale permit is necessary in your area.
  2. PROVIDE INFO. Create some signs with the following info — Type of sale, date and time, address and/or cross-streets. Remember: Most folks will be reading your signs as they drive by in a car so keep them concise and legible.
  3. CONSISTENCY. Every sign should be the same color and design so as not to confuse potential customers.
  4. ADD FLAIR! Attract eyes to your signs by adding balloons, pinwheels, arrows, etc.
  5. COMMUNITY BOARDS. Create a few 8.5″ x 11″ sale signs to hang on community boards at libraries, grocery stores, cafes, etc. (Here’s a helpful template.)
  6. GRAB ATTENTION. Write an attention-grabbing advertisement that you can post around the web. “Multi-Family” or “Moving Sale” are sure to attract some extra attention!
  7. DETAILS. Along with pertinent information; like times, dates, and location, your online ad should include details. List your big ticket items and any collectibles. If you’re selling clothes, include brands and sizes. And don’t forget to attach some photos!
  8. NETWORK. There are lots of websites you can advertise your yard sale for FREE. Check out Craigslist, YardSales.net, and GarageSaleFinder.com. (Just to name a few!)
  9. GET SOCIAL! Don’t forget to post about your yard sale on your personal social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
  10. IN BLACK AND WHITE. Finally, if you have the funds for it you may want to consider taking out an ad in your local newspaper. These can run anywhere between $25-$200 depending on the reach of the paper.
