Fall At-Home Date Ideas with Date Night In Box

It’s that time of year again. By the time I’m done with work for the day, it’s already dark outside. The last thing I want to do most nights is bundle up and head back out into the cold. But on the flip side, spending every night ’til Spring binge watching TV shows on the couch isn’t exactly my idea of the greatest love story ever told. So, what’s the middle ground?

Here are a few fall-friendly date ideas that you and your partner can enjoy from home…

1. Cook dinner together while you listen to tunes

Sure, you gotta eat EVERY night but a lot of times that can mean divvying up the labor, grabbing something on the go, or heating up leftovers. For an at-home date night, consider planning something special and then cook together. You can pop a bottle of wine, chat at the table as things are in the oven, and…

…don’t forget the tunes! Pop on a fun playlist that you can enjoy in the background as you cook. Music can really set the tone for the evening so pick songs for the vibe. Romantic, fun, can’t help but sing along — you get the idea.

2. Get cozy & make a craft

You don’t have to go wild with supplies, but putting your heads together to make something is a great way to spend an evening…and looking at the finished product will always make your heart swell. Chet and I spent several weeks one summer figuring out how to turn vintage books into notebooks and the ones we kept bring back such wonderful memories.

Pictured above are the materials we used to make a Christmas ornament (the ink pad was for thumb prints and the ballpoint Sharpie for writing important-to-us dates) and a little tea light candle. Who knows!? If you enjoy a craft enough, you can always consider batch-making a few more…holiday gift-giving is right around the corner! (And that candle was so easy to make, I’m thinking everyone is gonna get one in their stocking this year, lol)

3. Engage in a little friendly competition

Playing a game is another great, screen-free option. A lot of games are geared for more than 2 players but do a little research to 2-person games the two of you can get behind. This dice game is a lot of fun! I also can endorse backgammon (though I’m terrible at it, lol), Trivial Pursuit, and Rummikub.

4. Curl up on the couch with a movie

Ok, ok…so curling up on the couch is SOMETIMES allowed! You’ve Got Mail is the perfect Fall film after all. Other cozy options? Autumn in New York, Good Will Hunting, October Sky, Practical Magic, Remember the Titans, The Blind Side, and When Harry Met Sally.

Plus, checking this one out of from the library with the intention of watching during a fall-themed date night felt way more romantic than clicking something from the queue, ya know?

What are you up to this week? Fall is here!!! Even in South Florida the weather has cooled a bit, the sunshine has that golden glow, and there’s a frequent lovely breeze blowing. This is my last week being in my twenties so I intend to eat autumnal desserts, plan a well-deserved beach trip, and make toasts over Gin & Ginger Ales that end in “R.I.P. 20’s!” Thanks to everyone who made this past year so wonderful. Now, bring on the big 3-0! Happy Wednesday to all of you lovely readers; please enjoy these links…

H&M Style Updates for Fall – Basics

Back to Basics with H&M
Let’s talk Fall wardrobe updates! While the season doesn’t officially change until later this month, with back-to-school chatter and the return of the prodigal Pumpkin Spice Latte,
today seems like a fine time to discuss. Just for fun, I thought I’d fill you in on the pieces I would choose for a sartorial refresh of the autumnal variety! I went with H&M because it’s a little more realistic for the ol’ pocketbook. With the fresh start feeling Fall offers (maybe that’s a holdover from school days), this season is a great time to get back to basics wardrobe-wise. Here are the 8 wardrobe essentials I’m loving for Autumn…
1. Crepe blouse. I love the flowy, easy-to-wear cut of this shirt. Dressed up or dressed down, it’s gonna be a comfortable addition to your closet. These are the type of shirts I find myself reaching for again and again because they look effortlessly put together no matter what you pair them with. ($14.99)
2. Monochrome tees. Go for these basics in a little larger size and look adorable on your jeans and t-shirt days with a casual front tuck and messy braid. These will be awesome for layering once the weather turns enough for you to pull on a jacket before heading out the door. And nothing makes a piece of statement jewelry pop like a simple white or black tee. ($5.99)
3. Patterned sleeveless blouses. For something a little more academic-looking, I’m a big fan of collared shirts paired with a cute cardigan. Not so big a fan of sweating because it’s still TOO hot for cardigans in September. (Especially in Florida, haha, but it definitely was in Kentucky as well!) Solution: sleeveless! I love the geometric pattern on the black & white and the gorgeous stars on the blue. Either would surely look adorbz with any existing cardigan collection you’ve been itchin’ to crack out. ($5.99)
4. Super slim black pants. Now I know 70’s flares are “in” this Fall in a major way, and if that’s your jam by all means, go for it! But I just think there’s something so badass about a pair of tight black trousers. And Lord knows it’s too hot for these bad boys in the Summer months. This pair is a tad high-waisted so your legs will look as though they stretch for miles! ($19.99)
5. Boyfriend jeans. Who doesn’t love a trend that involves making sloppy look sexy? These are the perfect thing to pull on for long weekend afternoons spent picking apples or raking leaves or enjoying football games…you get the idea. All those quintessential, cozy Fall activities! Plus, the cute little cuffs allow you to show off new kicks! ($39.99)
6. LBD. You probably already have a go-to black dress in your repertoire. But if you don’t let me urge you to rectify that situation. They make a fantastic base for building an outfit, especially as the temperatures begin to plummet. Scarves, sweaters, jackets, tights, boots…the LBD is your blank canvas. This one is pretty casual and comfy just the way Fall SHOULD be! ($12.95)
7. Leopard print slip-ons. Slip-on sneakers, unlike bulkier lace-up kicks, look absolutely amazing with jeans. The fun print provides a little more pizzazz to your wardrobe color palette. Perfect for running errands or running late to class. ($29.99)
8. Loafers. I’ve seen several bloggers refer to loafers as the “nerdy glasses” of this season. They’re sophisticated and smart and give you that “I just came from the library!” look. Plus, I can see them being work OR brunch approps. Which is a win in my book! ($14.99)
P.S. Looking for accessories to pair with these digs? For jewelry I love this cocktail ring (opal!), the long and layered look of this necklace, and this aztec collar for when you’re REALLY going for it. For bags, if it’s in your budget, my pick would most definitely be this beauty!
Thoughts? What will you be wearing this Fall? When do you buy your wardrobe basics? I’d love to know…

Pumpkin Pie Smoothie.

Fall is here!!! If you’re wanting to do the APPROPRIATE thing and celebrate with copious amounts of pumpkin, but you don’t feel like baking or schlepping for a #basic PSL, I’ve gotcha covered. Sometimes you want your Fall in the form of an afternoon post-work or post-workout pick-me-up. Sometimes you want your Fall to come from the only kitchen appliance you can be bothered to get off the couch long enough to operate. (God bless you, Magic Bullet.) I know, I know…it’s sooo typical to love pumpkin and fall and fall food and pumpkin-y tasting fall foods. But listen, the only thing #basic about this recipe are the ingredients…which you probably already have on hand. So let’s get to it!

What you’ll need…

-3/4 cup vanilla almond milk

-1/3 cup pumpkin puree

-1/3 cup Green yogurt

-1/2 banana, sliced and frozen

-as many shakes of pumpkin pie spice as ya like

if you are me…

and how it all comes together…

-Put all ingredients into a blender or magic bullet and give it a whir! Add ice if you like that more traditional smoothie consistency. Leave it out if you prefer a consistency more akin to a mango lassi.

-Top with whipped cream, if you’d like, and another shake of pumpkin pie spice!

❤ Happy Fall! ❤

Free-time this Fall? No need to break the bank!

As the weather gets a little chillier and we shift from Summer to Autumn, I’ve got penny-pinching on my mind. Summer may have seen you spending a bit more liberally (vacations, eating out, outdoor adventures) and back-to-school time can get costly as well. Looking ahead to the holidays, the next couple months can be a great time to rein it in, make some cut-backs and start saving. So, turn off those air conditioners, meal plan, host a Naked Lady party to score clothes for a new Fall look…and as for fun; here are 10 ways to spend your down-time this Fall without breaking the bank!

yoga

Sweat.

Forget the fancy gym memberships and costly classes. You can just bust a move from the comfort of your own living room. Youtube and Pinterest are fitness gold-mines! Do Erin Motz’s 30 Day Yoga Challenge. See how many reps of push-ups/sit-ups/lunges/squats/WHATEVER you can do in a row. Try to do more each day. Go upside down in a hand stand! Wanna explore? Jog in your neighborhood. Find a hiking trail nearby.

photography

Practice.

Commit to picking back up a hobby you let fall by the way-side or finally learn the skill you’ve had the equipment for in the back of your closet for ages. Play around with that camera (even if it’s just on your iPhone…you could even sign up for an Instagram “picture a day” challenge). Bust out your craft supplies. Build something. Grow something. Dust off that violin. Teach yourself calligraphy or German or darts.

backgammon

Play.

Turn off your TV, close the laptop and play a game instead. Spread out on the floor with your significant other or gather ’round the kitchen table with friends. Play Backgammon, Rummikub, Pictionary, Jenga, Chess, Trivial Pursuit or Monopoly. Got a deck of cards? Deal out Hearts, Poker, Euchre, B.S. or my always and forever favorite THIRTEEN.

meadowthorpe

Explore.

You don’t always have to strap on your hiking boots and hit the woods to have an epic adventure. Try your hand at urban exploration. Find a historic neighborhood and provide a running commentary on the architecture (even if it’s completely made up). Get lost in a gi-normous indoor flea market or antique mall. Check out abandoned buildings (don’t get arrested). See how many green-spaces, fountains, swing-sets, hot-dog stands, libraries or pedways you can walk to in one day.

whalepig

Enrich.

Do a little research and find free cultural events going on in your area. Check out galleries displaying art in public places. Go to an educational lecture hosted by a school or church or non-profit. Lots of organizations love hosting free movies. Got a friend or family member in a play, concert, dance recital? See if you can peep their dress rehearsal for free. The public library is a fantastic resource. And if you live in a university town you’re golden!

formabookclubkindle

Read.

Nothing says Fall like hunkering in a cozy spot with your latest page-turner. Join a book club. Start your own. Blaze through some Young Adult fiction on your e-reader. Pick up a stack of historical romance novels from the library. No one needs to know about your literary guilty pleasures.

pumpkinchai

Slurp.

Don’t shell out all your hard-earned money at Starbies. Yes, you may lose that gold status (R.I.P.) but you can learn to make your favorite hot beverages at home. If you want to drink all pumpkin everything until Christmas day…so be it.

braid

Pamper.

Choose one evening a week to have some “you” time. Learn a new hair-style. Do face masks. Do the DIY kind, too. Give yourself a manicure.

winecheers

Cheers.

Ok, so this may cost a LITTLE bit but if you have a Trader Joes we’re not talking much. Have a few friends over for a nice night in. BYO #3buckchuck. BYO #horsdouevrestoshare BYO #classyattire Set your Pandora station to whatever you like best, mingle, and let the conversation flow.

radioeye

Volunteer.

Evaluate your unique gifts and skill-set and figure out ways to give back. Sign up to be a mentor. Play with puppies. Organize events. Try your hand at a radio reading service. Answer phones, ring doorbells or just listen. When you give of your time, not only are you NOT spending money, the Universe finds powerful ways to reward you. : )

What about y’all, dear readers? How do you save money without sacrificing fun? Will you be ballin’ on a budget like me this Fall? Sending you an encouraging high-five if so! We got this!
