About Beth Berger

Hi there! Finding Delight is a lifestyle and lifelong learning blog written and curated by me in Alabama. Along the way, I attempt to tackle the rough real world with books, budget-livin', brainpower and all the beautiful stuff you can find when you really look. Won't you join me? The true delight is in the finding out.

A fun bike accessory for wine-lovers.

bicycle wine rack

Now this is rather a niche item. But LORD if you know an avid cyclist with a penchant for the grapey-grape, you could certainly win a LOT of brownie points if you gifted them this bike accessory. Etsy seller oopsmark hand makes these bicycle wine racks with olive oil treated, vegetable tanned leather and antique brass fasteners. Wouldn’t it be fun to strap in your favorite bottle of Pinot and ride off into the sunset towards a dinner party?

P.S. My love lies a little more strongly with the hand-crafted yoga mat strap. Dinner parties be damned! I’ve got sun’s to salute and crow poses to conquer!

What wonderful things have you been up to, my loves? We enjoyed some extra relaxation time with the holiday weekend, and took a trip to explore Coral Gables on Sunday. I’ve also been introducing Chet to one of my (many) reality TV obsessions, the PBS historical documentary “- House” series. (Like Frontier House, Colonial House, etc.) Have you seen them? Hope you have a wonderful rest of your week, and while you’re at it, take a look at these treats the internet has to offer…

Stories of people who abandoned urban settings for something a little more pastoral.

After watching him in 2 great TV shows and following him on Instagram, I didn’t think I could love Matt McGory any more…I was wrong.

Piña Croix-ladas!

IMG_1248

Now that we live in South Florida I feel like tropical beverages are SUPER approps. Fruity and colorful drinks just seem to pair so well with views of palm trees (and lizards of various sizes–still getting used to THAT). But I’m not always real in the mood for whipping out a blender OR using up my perfectly good dessert calories on a mixed drink. Luckily, I found a happy medium that checks ALL my lazy girl boxes while also tasting spot-on like those delicious, over-priced Piña Coladas you can get at beach-side bars! My secret ingredient is La Croix sparkling water. This stuff is having quite the moment recently. And while I have found my self pretty addicted to the bubbly straight up (it’s such a good soda alternative!), I think it really shines when paired with a bit of alcohol. As do we all, amiriiite? Now I know the rest of you crazy kids, aka the folk who DON’T live waaay down here on the southern most tippy-tip of the U.S. map, are saying “But BETH…I just flipped my calendar to September soooo where’s the Pumpkin Spice drink? It’s Fall after-all!” To which I say, sure…saddle up to some seasonally themed apple or pumpkin alcohol all you want…but ONE day, when it’s a particularly dreary and desolate up there, and you desperately need to create your OWN sunshine for the day, you’ll have this little tropical number in your arsenal.  And oh how you’ll thank me.

IMG_1238

What you’ll need…

– White rum (you can also get pineapple or coconut flavored rum, if you like.)

– Pineapple juice (we went for a Pineapple Orange Banana medley this time around. More fruit, more fun.)

– Coconut flavor La Croix sparkling water

(Note: You can totally leave out the rum for an equally delicious mock-tail.)

and how it all comes together…

Mix equal parts of each ingredient over a ton of ice. Easy as that! Traditional Piña Coladas call for coconut cream which is certainly delicious but can taste a bit more like a dessert than a drink. The La Croix water gives the drink a much more refreshing feel. Garnish with a pineapple slice and/or maraschino cherry if you’re feelin’ fancy or if you’re trying to impress guests.

Pop in a stripey straw and enjoy the sunshine. Real OR imagined. CHEERS!

Would you try this drink, or do you already have a go-to cocktail for when you’re feeling a little tropical?

Do or Don’t: Pallet Furniture

pallets

Speaking of upcycling projects… One cool DIY idea that has always interested me is turning pallets into furniture. Have you seen one of these spectacular transformations? When I worked at Good Foods, I would pass HUGE stacks of pallets and wonder what sort of pieces they could become if they found their way into the right hands. There are some incredibly creative tutorials out there if this sort of thing strikes your fancy!

Here are 7 cool photos of a few finished products…

DIY: Cork Wreath

trash to treasure

When I was really little I told my parents I wanted to be a recycling woman when I grew up. Now, in my defense, the work I thought was involved in this profession was a lot different than how you may perceive it. I thought recycling people were given trash and then recycled it into items more useful or beautiful. Literally turning things from trash to treasure. My family had a good laugh. I pursued other career options. Life went on. Yet, I’d like to think I held on to a little bit of that childhood initiative. I still feel the need to create something out  of what was otherwise, to someone else, nothing. Maybe that would explain why for months I’d been holding on to a shopping bag full of corks at the back of my closet! An old co-worker’s cast-off…”Will anyone use these for a craft or something?” *raises hand* *ponders how long she’d been adding to this collection, the ol’ Wino!*

The itch to create something from her collection finally struck and I thought I’d show ya how to make your own! I’d eventually like to make a framed cork-board completely out of wine bottle corks but it’s gonna take a lot of nights sipping ol’ faithful (Read: Yellow Tail Chardonnay and whatever’s cheapest Malbec) before we get there. In the meantime…

What you’ll need:

IMG_0933

  • fairly sizable collection of wine bottle corks
  • styrofoam wreath form (You can get these at any craft store but I’ve also seen them for sale at lots of other places, even Dollar Tree.)
  • hot glue gun
  • glue sticks
  • ribbons, fake flowers, buttons, burlap, or anything else you’d like to attach

And how it all comes together:IMG_0939Heat up your glue gun and get to work! There’s no real science here. Just glue the corks down in whatever arrangement you fancy, making sure to leave as little open space as possible for the inside of the wreath to poke through. If there are words, design, or cool details on a cork that you want to display, affix it prominently. This can be a great way to show off a cork that may have sentimental value to you. Think: the bottle you opened on an anniversary or the souvenir wine you brought home from a trip abroad. A few of the corks I used were visibly cracked and I thought that looked cool! If you don’t, hide them near the bottom.

Note: Depending on how your wreath form looks, you may want to wrap it in fabric or burlap before gluing down the corks. Use a long piece of fabric and continuously wrap until you reach the end. Glue the first and last edge down with your hot glue gun.

Once your wreath is completely covered in corks, you may want to add a little embellishment. I dove into my craft box to see what I had on hand and came up with some burlap, ribbon scraps, an old iron on transfer and a star charm. But you can use whatever strikes your fancy!

Now, hang and enjoy!

Do you like crafting with cast-offs? What’s a collection you have that could be re-purposed into something useful or beautiful? Pinterest awaits you! And speaking of Pinterest–follow me! I’m always pinning the cool up-cycle projects I find.

Rainy Day Adventure: The Arcade

IMG_1170

Now that we’re feeling settled in our new apartment, Chet and I have been excited to do a little exploring in our ‘hood. After some internet searchin’, we stumbled upon an arcade not too far from our home-base. Since Sunday afternoon was dreary and rainy, with the remnants of Hurricane Erika washing up on us, we thought there was no better time to drive over and give Arcade Odyssey a go! They had tons of classic games, as well as rarer-to-the-States Japanese games (I know nothing about this sort of stuff but Chet was excited, lol), and a wall of pinball machines (!). We got some tokens and got tucked in…

Chet played a bunch of different games; his favorite was a crazy anime one called Chaos Code.

I mostly stuck to the pinball machines (Batman and The Simpsons were my jam) and this retro, Budweiser sponsored game called Tapper. Obsessed with Tapper, you guys. I want one in my house.

What a wonderful afternoon! Sometimes it’s fun to just act like a kid for a few hours. You feel a little giddy and lighter afterwards. I would definitely recommend an arcade trip if you’re looking for some sweet play-time with friends or your significant other. It’s a pretty budget friendly activity (just the cost of tokens) and you can keep it chill or get really competitive–depending on what you’re after. And of course you gotta love a place with Pac Man…

IMG_1115

…and such a playful carpet print, lol. (I feel like this is the Universal pattern for arcades, movie theaters, and rollerskating rinks. Who instigated this?!)

We’ll certainly return for future fun!

Have you discovered any fun rainy day activities lately? Any suggestions? I’d love to hear…

dog on porch

Hey friends! We had the best time this weekend! Thankfully, Hurricane Erika turned into just a bit of rain by the time she reached us on Sunday. Now we’re back to hot and sunny days and floating in the pool whenever we get a free hour. Despite the gloomy weekend weather, we managed to pack in trips to Ikea (followed by several hours of furniture assembly), a little gyro shop, and an arcade. And I’ve already been loving working from my new desk this week! Hope you have a wonderful Wednesday, and here are some links for you to enjoy…

Showing off my new home workspace!

IMG_1189

home office

The folks at WeWork, a co-working company that builds communities to empower people to do what they love,  inspired me to share my current workspace and what I love about it. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect! This past weekend, after a morning trip to Ikea and a good few hours of flat-pack furniture assembly, I got to work setting up my NEW home workspace! I thought I’d give you guys a peek at the finished product. I’m already SO in love with it! I can’t wait to spend my days creating and writing at this gorgeous command center. I knew I wanted a color palette of white, gold, and Tiffany box blue so the Micke desk was a perfect fit for that aesthetic. Add to that my custom desktop computer, a few gold trinkets, and some stationery from the Target dollar spot and – wam BAM – the perfect little corner for productivity. Shall I show you around?

Mounted monitor.

IMG_1201

My monitor was painted white to match this mounting arm, a feature which allows me to position based on my viewing needs. And since my work-space is in our bedroom, those needs CAN include watching Netflix in bed.

Bits and bobs to keep me smiling.

bits and bobs

I’ve picked up quite a few desk accessories from Target over the past few months, including; post-it notes, page flags, bulletin/chalk board, and owl pushpins. All super affordable. I believe everyone should have a few desk trinkets to personalize their space. The stone was a gift from a co-worker. It says “Trust” and is the perfect size and shape for rolling around in your hand when you’re having a good think. The dino skeleton was a present years ago from my friend, Katie. And the gold wheel was thrifted. I’m sure it used to belong on a contraption that spun around but I just liked the way it looked and it functions quite nicely as a coaster. The bird mouse was a must-have as soon as I saw it.

Custom computer.

IMG_1212

Chet built me my very own computer, including painting it to my aforementioned color scheme, and presented it to me for Christmas last year. I’d say not many people are lucky enough to have a computer cute enough to proudly display on top of their desk LET ALONE such a tech savvy individual as their BETROTHED!

Plenty of drawer space.

IMG_1215

IMG_1217

A big selling point for me for this particular desk were the 2 large drawers that run the whole length. They’re the perfect place to stow my notebooks, stationery, cords, current reading materials, folders, and adult coloring book(!).

Thanks so much to WeWork for encouraging me to share this post. I always find other people’s creative spaces quite inspiring so it’s fun to have an excuse to show off my own!

If you’re a freelancer (like me), run a small business or startup, or work remotely, and you’re interested in joining a coworking community, do check out WeWork. They have lovely office spaces located all across the world and offer tons of benefits.

Eat well on $4 a day.

IMG_1173

IMG_1178

Good and Cheap, the Kickstarter funded PDF which showcases how to eat well on ANY budget, is now available in book form! Leanne Brown created this collection of go-to recipes while pursuing a master’s in food studies and food policy from New York University. Brown believes, “everyone should eat great food every day. Eating well means learning to cook. It means banishing the mindset that preparing daily meals is a huge chore or takes tremendous skill.” Good and Cheap was created with many budget savvy folks in mind, but particularly those living on the U.S. food stamp budget of $4 a day. The book teaches you how to prepare dishes ranging from tomato soup to deconstructed cabbage rolls, gives handy tips for creative leftovers, and features gorgeous photography.

Kudos to Leanne for this amazing idea and for her  continued efforts to get a copy in the hands of those who may need it the most. I’m thrilled to have this reference handy! It’s become a favorite guide in my kitchen and a lovely book just to flip through for inspiration.

IMG_1181

Need even MORE of a reason to purchase?  For every copy bought, a free copy will be given to a person or family in need. Books are distributed through food charities and non-profits so that someone else can have a resource for making healthy and delicious food. Buy one. Give one. Pretty cool, right?

P.S. A meal plan I created using recipes from Good and Cheap and my thoughts on food culture.

Coffee date!

Happy Friday! Why don’t you grab a cup of joe and join me for a quick coffee date catch-up hosted by Jenna over at Gold and Bloom. We can chat about what’s been goin’ on  in life lately!

coffee date life lately

Loving lately…

Our new apartment in Miami! It’s really starting to feel like home and I’m excited to continue decorating it over the coming weeks.

Working out to Yoga with Adriene videos with a view of palm trees out our giant sliding glass door. I’ve long been a lover of these free yoga tutorials but looking out at such a tropical wonderland makes them all the more fun!

Reading lately…

Tardy to the party on this one but after finishing Station Eleven, I picked up Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortensen. I have a weird obsession with books/TV/movies about mountaineering so the premise, a failed attempt at a K2 summit leads climber turned humanitarian to a village desperately in need of a school, spoke to my heart. This book was on EVERYONE’s book club list (including Oprah’s) back in 2007 so I’m excited to finally give it a read!

Watching lately…

Besides re-watching the Miami episode of Anthony Bourdain’s The Layover, we’ve watched some other fun stuff, including; Skeleton Twins, Wet Hot American Summer First Day of Camp, and Annie Hall (which Chet had never seen).

I’m also loving this season of So You Think You Can Dance. Team Gaby and Jaja!!!

Eating lately…

Easy and cheap soups, stews, and burrito bowls. Oh, and cuban crackers. LOTS OF CUBAN CRACKERS. And Cuban bread, too! YUM!

Purchasing lately…

This pendant light which I’m somewhat obsessed with and is now hanging over one corner of our bedroom.

Emergency supplies for what’s looking like is going to be my very first hurricane. Yesterday, we stocked the cupboards with non-perishables, water, and candles.  Hoping things don’t get too bad but it’s always good to be prepared!

Now it’s your turn! What have you been up to lately? Read any page turners? Purchased anything you’re super stoked about? I’d love to hear! Oh, and if you have any inclement weather preparedness tips, DO let me know. Have a fab weekend, everyone!!! And if you’re in the “cone of uncertainty” like yours truly, STAY SAFE!!!
