What’s your favorite mug?

IMG_2149

So, this is a totally random post…but a while back my brother posted about his “mug hierarchy” on Twitter and I thought it was a hilarious concept. Let me explain. One or two mugs tend to turn into a collection of mugs without even trying. They’re super inexpensive so it’s hard to resist picking up and purchasing the ones you like. They’re also very popular presents (especially from those people who don’t know you super well — everyone needs a mug!) so the collection starts to grow even larger after the holiday season. And then add to that all the FREE mugs you harmlessly nab at conferences, work events, speech tournaments, and any number of situations where companies are trying to lure you with swag. Suddenly you have over a dozen mugs PER PERSON in your otherwise stream-lined kitchen.

hadley pottery

HOWEVER, even with a cupboard full of diverse options, my brother argues, there’s always those few favorites you find yourself consistently reaching for. Your mug hierarchy! If your favorite is dirty or in the dishwasher, you reach for your second favorite, then third favorite, and so on.

beauty and the beast mug

I found this to be SO TRUE. Do you do this too? Or is my family just weird? I snapped pictures of my current four favorites to show you guys.

The slate grey mug with the white mo-ped on it is from Starbucks. I got it a few years ago when my sister was a barista and I could use her sweet staff discount. I love the matte texture of this mug and it’s probably my number one go-to. The Florida mug is also from Starbucks and Chet got it for me for my birthday in honor of our move to The Sunshine State. The Hadley Pottery mug was a Christmas present from my mom a few years ago. She has a huge collection of Hadley Pottery and drinking from this one reminds me of my childhood. And The Beauty and the Beast mug ALSO reminds me of my childhood. I picked this little guy up at Habitat ReStore. It was a quarter and I couldn’t resist….see what I mean about mugs so easily getting out of hand!?!

Oh and here’s what the horse mug says when you’ve finished your morning cup of joe…

IMG_2156

Yes, it really is the little things in life. Haha!

Those are the mugs I reach for every morning! What’s YOUR favorite mug? Do you have a mug hierarchy? Let me know!

mid-week round-up

What’s everyone up to this week? My sister and her friend came for a visit over the weekend, and we had a great time exploring the huge park in my neighborhood and eating the yummiest Cuban food. On Sunday we went to The Deering Estate where Katie participated in a table reading of a brand new script written by an up and coming playwright. It was so good! Wishing you all a beautiful spring day, and now on to the links…

Tackling that nagging, unfinished project.

unhung gallery wall

How do you go about tackling those nagging, unfinished projects looming about your life? Gretchen Rubin, author of the book The Happiness Project (a book I love, btw!) has the following resolution when it comes to such things: Finish the things I’ve started. Or put an end to them.”

I love that! A few years ago I applied this same principle to books. I had a bad habit of starting a book with great intentions, finding I didn’t like it that much, and then letting it sit on my nightstand for the next month as I told myself day in and day out, “I really should finish that book.” But then *lightbulb!* I realized I could read so. much. more. when I focused on books I loved and abandoned those I didn’t. Makes total sense that this could be applicable to other areas of one’s life.

Now, I know this wouldn’t work for everything. There are certain projects that just have to get done and can’t be cast aside for other pursuits. Like taxes. Gotta do ’em! But I can think of a lot of other instances where giving myself one of only two options: 1) put everything away and just call it quits OR 2) just do the damn thing! would make for just the kick in the pants I need. And make sure, just like with the books, that I’m only pursuing projects I’m actually passionate about.

What do you think? How do YOU tackle nagging, unfinished projects?

Cool Poster Round-Up!

After a recent apartment refresh (new couch! score!), I’ve been feeling especially design inclined. “What other updates should we make to our space?” I asked myself. So, I took to Etsy and descended down the rabbit hole on a variety of decorative elements. What struck me most were all the beautiful posters! And they’re all so affordable! Here’s a round-up of a few of my favorites…

Recipe: Cincinnati Chili

cincinnati chili

Growing up in Central Kentucky, with two sets of grandparents one state up in Ohio, I learned to love the joys of serving chili with a dash of cinnamon and a plate of slippery spaghetti noodles. I can remember slurping up this beloved regional concoction as a kid, whipped up at home and on family day trips to visit the Cincinnati malls. A few years ago, a Goldstar Chili opened up just blocks away from my mom’s house and our whole family greeted it with open arms. (Even the vegans among us…they’ve got that plant-based hook up at Goldstar, y’all.) In fact, a couple days ago when my mom texted our family group chat to say she didn’t feel like cooking dinner my sister and I BOTH responded she should hit up that Goldstar. But then that got ME craving the stuff…and since I no longer live by any Skylines or Goldstars…I headed to my kitchen instead!

What you’ll need:

– small onion, chopped

– 1 lb. ground turkey

– red bell pepper, chopped

– 2 cups chicken broth

– 1 28 oz can crushed tomatoes

– 2 6 oz cans tomato paste

– 1 1/2 tsps apple cider vinegar

– 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

– 2 Tbsps chili powder

– 2 tsps ground cumin

– 1 1/2 tsps salt

– 1 tsp cayenne

– 1 tsp cinnamon

– 1 tsp paprika

– 1 Tbsp cocoa powder

– 1/2 tsp garlic powder

– 1 can of beans (red kidney, black, whatever you have on hand)

And how it all comes together:

– Heat the chopped onion in a pan with some olive oil until the edges start to caramelize.

– Add the ground turkey and separate it with a spoon. Cook until browned.

– Transfer turkey and onions to a crockpot. Then add all of the remaining ingredients listed above except for the beans.

– Cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 5-6 hours.

– Add a drained can of beans to the crockpot for the last hour of cooking time.

– Serve chili over spaghetti or angel hair pasta noodles. Top with shredded cheddar cheese and oyster crackers!

How to Eliminate Decision Fatigue and Get More Done

how to eliminate decision fatigue

As I mentioned in this post, I’m not very decisive. While I’m great at split-second decision making (think: barking orders during emergency situations or finding the best course of action when work events go awry), life’s more mundane questions, like what to eat for lunch or wear to a friend’s wedding, can leave me perplexed.

While I may consider myself an extreme case, I have a feeling I’m not alone. You may notice a few signs of decision fatigue in your own life as well. Perhaps you come home from a long day of work feeling completely exhausted. You can’t quite decide what to do so you sit on the couch watching TV instead of going to the gym. You have no idea what you want for dinner so you go get takeout instead of cooking. That’s decision fatigue! Whether sick of choosing or just overcome with options, your brain defaults to the easiest decision possible.

Over the years, I’ve figured out a few ways to cope with decision fatigue. I have found that organizing my life in a way that eliminates decisions is tantamount to increasing my productivity. You may find you’re the same…

decision fatigue food

When it comes to deciding what to eat, I’ve found that making these decisions “in bulk” is the best way to not succumb to restaurants in the 5 o’clock but no idea what to eat for dinner madness. Set aside time to make a meal plan each week. If you’re feeling extra on top of things then do a bit of meal prepping, too. You could go all out and package up 21 meals into neatly organized tupperwares or simply take a bit of time to get ahead. Wash and chop up produce. Cook a grain. Boil some eggs.

Check out this post to learn more about sticking to a certain theme for dinner each night of the week. This way, even when you slip, and find yourself with out a plan or anything prepped, you’ll at least know “It’s Thursday so we’re having stir-fry.” (Or whatever you selected.) Another approach you could try if that feels a bit too limiting is the 14-day dinner menu.

decision fatigue clothes

Another decision I must make on the daily (sometimes multiple times a day…UGH!) is what to wear. Ever notice how super successful folk tend to wear the same things all the time? They might be on to something! While I don’t plan on rocking jeans and a black turtleneck every day a la Steve Jobs, developing a capsule wardrobe is a great way to limit the scope of my options. Do a little closet experimentation and see if you can come up with a capsule that suits your lifestyle.

Another possibility is to organize your clothes based on when you would wear them. Dedicate a drawer to workout wear, a section of your closet to office apparel, another for running errands and weekends at home, and a dedicated place for more formal attire. Identify what you’ll be doing and then head to the corresponding area to grab your outfit.

If buying and trying lots of clothes and keeping up with fashion trends is something that’s important to you, consider coming up with some outfit equations or cheat sheets that may work to speed up your getting dressed process. Then you can put together different combos like skirt + cardigan + tights + boots + boho earrings + scarf lickety-split!

Conversely, if choosing which items of clothing to add to your wardrobe is contributing to your decision fatigue, consider looking into services like Stitch Fix. I LOVE Stitch Fix because I don’t have to stand in a store and ruffle through racks trying to decide what to buy! They simply send me 5 items of clothing they think I’ll love, based on my style surveys and Pinterest boards, and then I either keep them or I don’t. I’ve also eased my clothes decisions by choosing to focus on building this 50 piece capsule wardrobe.

decision fatigue planning

If you suffer from decision fatigue I HIGHLY recommend you start keeping some sort of a notebook or planner system. Spend some time with this little guy every night before you go to bed. Write down all the things you’d like to accomplish the next day. Before I found a notebook system that worked for me I would start each day with my mind SO FULL of all the things that needed to get done. I would repeat them over and over and re-order them in terms of importance and then repeat them again. Basically, struggling to decide when to do what. Take it from me, just write it down. I can still work out the order the next day, and migrate things that don’t get done, but having that rough sketch the night before saves me so much brain space.

decision fatigue finances

This one may seem pretty obvious but I think it’s worth mentioning. Set up direct deposit so you don’t have to decide a good time to take your paycheck to the bank. Work out an amount you feel comfortable allocating for savings and schedule automated transfers from your checking account to a savings account. This way you won’t have to decide (as often) when and how much to set aside. Switch things like utilities, internet, and cell phone bills over to autopay so you don’t have to decide when to pay what bill and whether to mail a check or pay online. Easy peasy!

decision fatigue schedule 2

Instead of saying, “I’d like to explore my city more” or “I need to exercise” or “I want to spend time with my friends” and having to DECIDE when in your busy life you’re going to do these things…make COMMITMENTS. Set your priorities and then schedule your priorities. Learning to do this was a HUGE first step for me in investing in myself. Set up a recurring movie night each week with your friends. Declare #adventuresaturday and explore something new with your sweetheart (See picture above!). Set Monday, Wednesday, Friday as your workout days. Invest in your hobbies for an hour each day after dinner. Wanna grow your side hustle? Head to a coffee shop every Sunday, put your phone on airplane mode, and dig in.

Keep up a routine for long enough and it will soon develop into a habit. And you know what that means? It no longer took any thought. No decisions, no fatigue, no brain space.

Just life lived.

Do you suffer from decision fatigue? Have you made any lifestyle changes to limit the amount of decisions you have to make? I want to hear about them!

Hi friends! What’s been happening? Chet and I went furniture shopping on Saturday. We got a new couch and a futon for his office (among a myriad of other things…it was Ikea after all!). I’d say it was a success and I’m LOVING the total transformation our living room has undergone with the furniture update and just a little bit of re-arranging. Oh, and thank you so much for all your sweet input on this big decision! I was so flattered by your thoughtful consideration of the options. I’m definitely learning that planning a wedding takes a village! Haha! Big love to all of you on this Wednesday and here’s to a great rest of your week. Here’s the round-up…

February favorites.

february favorites

With the turning of the calendar page from February to March, it’s time to bundle together the best products, places, media and everything in between from the last month. Here are 9 things I found myself loving in February…

1. Tom Bihn backpack

I was floored when I opened this early Valentine’s Day present from Chet. I just couldn’t get over the adorable pattern and perfect pocket placement. I’ve been wearing it around the whole month and it does NOT disappoint. You can read my full review of the bag and see some pictures of me sporting it in the wild HERE. I can not thank my thoughtful dude enough for this spectacular present. We have many day-trips and ultra-light adventures ahead of us. And we shall be so wonderfully well-equipped!

2. Downton Abbey

While I had previously seen most of the first three seasons of this show, I convinced Chet to watch it from the beginning with me. We just started the 5th season and I never want it to end! In case you’ve been living under a rock, the British drama follows the lives of the Crawley family and all its servants as they go about their business, upstairs and down, in the large country manor estate known as Downton Abbey. The show begins with the 1912 sinking of the Titanic but now in season 5 we’re all the way up to 1923. It’s quite fun to track the actual historic events that play out alongside the fictional lives of the Crawleys. Bonus to our nightly viewing? Chet does a bang-up impersonation of Mr. Carson, the Crawleys’ beloved butler, and will often chime in with his own commentary.

3. WKU forensics alums

In February, I traveled to Bowling Green, KY to spend some time with the current WKU Forensics Team and a small group of alums. We had a great weekend coaching speech and catching up. This team was such a big part of my life for 7 years that I love any excuse to step back into that world for a few hours. I saw some amazingly passionate, intelligent, and inspiring speeches and even played a few rounds of flip cup. (When with your college pals in a college town…..amirite?)

4. He Named Me Malala

I was selected this month by 21st Century Fox to receive an advanced screening copy of the documentary, He Named Me Malala. I pretty much cried through the whole film and really hope lots of people tuned in to watch the TV premiere. It was a profoundly impactful film made by filmmaker Davis Guggenheim exploring the life of Malala Yousafzai before and after her attack at the hands of Taliban. You can read more about the film HERE.

5. Save-the-Date cards

Initially, I wasn’t too on board with the whole idea of sending Save-the-Date cards. Wouldn’t it just be easier to hop on the internet to spread the word about our selected date and send out invitations later? But then again…I LOVE sending and receiving mail and I just couldn’t let the opportunity to send some mailbox cheer pass me by. I ended up designing them myself with the free photo editing site PicMonkey. I’m REALLY happy with how they turned out and think using PicMonkey and printing them on cardstock was a wonderful budget-friendly option. I’d be happy to post a tutorial about how I whipped them up if you’re interested!

6. My notebook

I snagged this notebook from Target when Chet and I were in Lafayette for Christmas. While I’m a huge fan of Moleskines and the Baron Fig Confidante, I’d sort of come to the conclusion that I wanted a hard-back spiral-bound for my day-to-day, planner-ish notebook. I like to have my To-Do list out all day and while other notebooks claim to “lay flat” they don’t always do so, or they do but they take up too much desk space. I also like to dedicate a whole page per day which can seem a bit wasteful when using a higher end notebook. I started this notebook, along with a new notebook system, on January 1st and it’s been really helpful and easy to stick to. I use a modified version of the Bullet Journal system. I prioritize daily spreads over anything else and I don’t index but I implement a lot of the other strategies. When this one is all used up I think I’ll continue to stick to this type of notebook!

7. Shakespeare’s First Folio

The book that made the bard made it’s way to Florida International University this month! Chet and I got dressed up and attended the opening of the first folio exhibit at The Frost Art Museum. It was amazing to see so much Shakespeare programming and hype occur at the university and in Miami while the book was on display. We loved taking a peek inside but only wished we could hold it in our hands and flip through the pages. Think of all that history!

8. New living room couch

Arriving into our humble abode just in the nick of time to make this favorite’s list is our new couch! We headed out early last Saturday morning to beat the crowds at Ikea and came home with all sorts of goodies. I’ve had my eye on a grey couch for some time now and I think we chose a great one! We poked around online to find a few contenders before heading into the thick of things but then ended up going with this one instead! It is super comfy and a great place to lounge with the sliding glass doors pushed open for a cool breeze. (Don’t mind the wrinkles in the photo above. It was only just born when I snapped that pic!)

9. Rooibos Chai Tea

My mom is always hooking me up with fair trade goodies and in February I was loving this chai tea she sent. I love brewing up a mug when the weather is a bit dreary or for an evening treat when there’s no dessert in the house. It’s just the right level of spicy and sweet with delicious notes of vanilla. YUM!

Wedding Dress Vote!

wedding dress candidates

Hey friends! So with my wedding just a little over four months away I figure it is probably time to buckle down and find my wedding dress. The only problem? I’m literally the most indecisive person on planet Earth. Especially when it comes to buying clothes. And EVEN MORE especially when it comes to buying clothes that are more than 20 bucks.

Since getting engaged, I’ve kept an eye on a few of my favorite websites and took note of the recurring elements that sent my mouse darting for the bookmark button. I know I want a short, vintage-inspired dress with some lace elements. I’m not too picky about the shade of white. I like a more structured silhouette with classic, flattering lines. And I don’t want anything strapless because I know my life and I would just spend the whole time hoisting it up. And faffing with your clothes is just never a good look.

Based on those specifications, I patrolled the interwebs, and have settled on my EIGHT FAVORITES.  (I know, I know. 8 is still a lot but I TOLD you I was indecisive!) While each of these dresses tick all my boxes, they’re all still quite different. And I like them for completely different reasons! So, I’d LOVE your opinion. Want a closer look?

1. ModCloth Perfected Prestige Dress

The overlay on this one is very unique. I like the shape of the dress and think it would be quite comfortable in the Kentucky July heat.

wedding dress 1

2. ModCloth Beyond the Bells Dress

I love the detailing in this one! The skirt maintains a structured shape with that subtle side gathering while the top is lovely left loose and boho-inspired.

wedding dress 2

3. Ralph Lauren Embroidered Lace Sheath Dress

This one is definitely the most simple of the 8 but there’s something really elegant about it. I love the straight across neckline and the dainty, barely-capped sleeves.

wedding dress 3

4. Eliza J Bell Sleeve Fit & Flare Dress

Hello 70’s vibes! This one may be a tad wild but the white makes the lace pattern appear more playful than bold and who doesn’t love an excuse for a bell sleeve?

wedding dress 4

5. Adrianna Papell Lace Fit & Flare Dress

How beautiful would this be paired with some simple ballet flats and a huge bunch of colorful wildflowers? I’ve always had a thing for all things prairie-inspired and I think this dress fits that bill quite nicely.

wedding dress 5

6. BHLDN Hadley Dress

The intricate lace pattern makes this one look just a smidge more sophisticated than the rest. I would wear classic and simple accessories  and let the dress itself do all the outfit talking.

wedding dress 6

7. J. Crew Natalia Dress in Leavers Lace

This one would fit in splendidly amongst the art and giant windows at our gallery wedding venue. I love that the dress is short in length while the shape and sleeves play little eye-tricks to elongate.

wedding dress 7

8. J. Crew Elsa Dress in Leavers Lace

The shape of this dress may well be my favorite. The structure would help me rock the look with confidence while the look of the lace and the sweet sleeves would add softness and romance.

Wanderlust: A Castle for Every Season

For a bit of fun today (it IS Friday after all) let’s do a little imaginary traveling!

Below, I’ve selected a different castle for us to visit for each season of the year. Maybe it’s all the Downton Abbey I’ve been watching, but I’ve been feeling drawn to explore historic homes of the palatial variety. So let’s dive in…

chateau de chambord
Photo via here.

In the Fall — Head to the Chateau de Chambord to check out all sorts of features of French Renaissance architecture, including the famous Helix staircase. The golden sunlight of Autumn and the changing leaves make the castle’s stone walls appear even more regal.

In the Winter — Nip over to Malahide Castle for the chance to step into a fairy-tale while still only a short drive from Dublin’s City Centre. The dreary weather may make the castle seem foreboding but there’s the promise of a pint and an order of fish and chips as soon as you’re safely back in ol’ Dublin.

Osaka Castle

In the Spring  — Travel to Osaka Castle for a wander of the grounds amidst the blooming Sakura Blossoms. Allergies starting to take a toll? Head inside for a history lesson about how this 17th century castle played an important role in the unification of Japan.

In the Summer — Visit the impossibly bejeweled and painstakingly painted Grand Palace. Tucked in the heart of Thailand’s capital city, you may find just the moment of serenity you need in the midst of all the hustle and bustle and Summer’s heat.

Which would you visit if you had to choose just one? Would you head to France in the Fall, Ireland at Winter-time, Japan in Spring, or Thailand in the sweltering Summer? Share below!

Want to contribute to my travel fund so that I can check a few castles off my bucket list? WHY THANK YOU!
