mid-week round-up

Hello again! It seems folks all over the country have been experiencing a cold snap these last few days so I hope you’re managing to stay warm and toasty. The lows in Miami were in the 50’s and it was amusing to watch the locals break out their parkas and beanies. That’s practically an arctic blast down here! In other news, Chet and I are headed to St. Pete tomorrow. I’m super stoked to see my sister, play a little shuffleboard, and enjoy the gulf-side of the state for a few days. Have you ever been to St. Petersburg, FL? Any recommendations? I’ll post what we’re up to over on my Instagram. Hope you have a great rest of your week, and here are a few links for you to peruse…

How To Stick To Your 2017 Goals

you-do-you-calendar

Did you get a pretty 2017 wall calendar for Christmas? Still trying to figure out the best way to use it because you are happily married to Google Calendar (or iCal or your Jofelo journal or phone reminders)? Why not display it some place prominent and use it to track your goals in the months ahead.

It can be easy to stick to resolutions right off the bat. Early days and all that. But it can get a little trickier as your enthusiasm starts to wane. For a jolt of accountability, I love the idea of picking three goals for the year and buying a stockpile of three different types of sticker. Correspond the stickers to a goal and award yourself one for each day you complete your goal. Your goals for 2017 may be big — like training for a marathon or saving money for a down payment on a house — or they might be slight — like packing  your lunch more often or apologizing less. Either way, there’s something so satisfying about watching those stickers add up.

I’ve got my eye on these gold stars (always a classic), hearts, and EMOJIS(!). 2017 – me and my stickers are comin’ for ya!!!

Have you set any goals for the new year? How do you hold yourself accountable?

(The calendar pictured above is from the Etsy shop cobblestonestudio2 and you can purchase one HERE. 10% of the proceeds from these calendars go to Mental Health America. Which is awesome.)

Welcome to 2017, my friends! Gah! How futuristic does THAT sound? I hope you’re all doing well and settling into the new year with ease. Did you make any resolutions? Set any new intentions? I’d like to develop some new organizational systems (paperwork, computer files, my planner…all these Christmas decorations that need to come down eventually, lol) and decrease time spent in front of screens. I’m also kick-starting my year with daily yoga videos from Adriene. (LOVE her January challenges!) Now, if reading more random internet articles was a resolution of yours, I’ve got ya covered… But you can feel free to click through even if it wasn’t…

Hi friends! I hope you all had an amazing Thanksgiving holiday. I’ve been a bit M.I.A. around these parts. Our internet is a little on the fritz, and nothing annoys me more than starting a post only to lose internet connection for the next two hours. Hopefully the problem will be resolved soon. Another reason for my absence? A little Thanksgiving vacay in St. Pete! Chet and I drove up to spend some time with my mom and sister for the holiday weekend. We had a wonderful dinner at Bella Brava, played a few rounds of shuffle board, enjoyed some lovely parks….and watched ALL of the Gilmore Girls revival. All in all, a very productive trip! I hope y’all had similarly magnificent weekends. Now, enjoy a little mid-week pick-me-up in the way of one dozen links…

How’s it going this week, guys? After a restful weekend, I started work Monday on a DIY Advent calendar. IDK why but the Christmas bug has bit me extra hard this year. I will wait until after Thanksgiving to begin decorating but that doesn’t mean I’m not daydreaming about Christmas decor. All the holiday stuff out in stores already is just so darn cute! I’ve also been sneaking in as many episodes of Gilmore Girls as humanly possible in preparation for their triumphant return on Netflix. (I am basically this meme.) Hope you all are well, and here are a few click-worthy links I think you should check out…

How’s everyone doing today? Honestly, I still feel like I’m in shock. My mixed bag of emotions includes sadness, disbelief, anger, and grief for what could have been.

But I also feel an overwhelming love for the people in this country, especially my friends and family who now face the very real possibility that hardship awaits. I believe we can all do good in spite of the roadblock we’ve found ourselves up against. I believe we can claim the power in our own lives to effect change and help others. This love and these beliefs are what I’m clinging to.

Today, I’m bummed…because I really, really, really wanted a woman in The White House. I’m mourning for our country and how it would have felt to have her, despite facing a loud-mouthed male opponent, come out on top. I was counting so much on the tears I would shed for her victory that I never considered the tears I would shed for us all if she lost.

Tomorrow, the fight continues.

A Fun Afternoon Adventure: Pokemon Hunting!

pokemonbeth

A few days ago, Chet and I drove over to Florida International University to catch some Pokemon. The campus is HUGE, and lucky for us, full to bursting with little poke-critters just looking to be nabbed. Although everyone and their mother has hopped on the Pokemon GO trend, I thought I’d offer my two cents. This app acts as a remarkable catalyst for adventure (urban OR natural), conversation,  and healthy habits.

It struck me, as we walked around FIU for hours in the mid-day sun, how encouraging it was to see so many families with young children out looking for Pokemon amidst the engineering buildings and law libraries. Maybe, like us, these families had some connection to the university. But maybe not. Maybe they live nearby and noticed the plethora of poke-dex filling creatures up for grabs. Maybe their kids have never stepped foot on a university campus before. Perhaps, their surroundings will ignite something in their trajectory and years later they’ll return as a student. Who knows!

pokemonchet

The same can be said for all the parks and businesses and churches and organizations that are no doubt being newly discovered. You can’t come back to a place you never knew existed. (Case in point – There’s a sushi place near us with a Pokemon gym and HI< HELLO they have the best bento box lunch specials so yep, see ya soon.)

Anyways…If a free app can incite curiosity and new experiences then of course I’m all for it. If a feature on your phone motivates  you to have real life conversations then what a change of pace. If playing a video game gets you to go outside and explore your environment then play on!

This is all to say, if you’re looking for a super budget-friendly afternoon date or family outing, I highly recommend heading out on a hunt.

Have you been playing Pokemon GO? Discovered any new-to-you places along the way? Let me know!

Have you had a browse of the magnificent paper goods shop, Thimblepress? I love the idea of their gold foil cards that feature hand-drawn illustrations of state flowers. Aren’t they beautiful?

You can buy one card (Wouldn’t they be awesome to send to someone who has recently moved to a new state?!) or a box of six. Or rep the whole U.S. of A. with a print of the whole map. Now that’s one heck of a bouquet!

The idea for Thimblepress’ State Flower Collection was born from a quote by Lady Bird Johnson, “Where flowers bloom so does hope.” I love that.

How’s everyone doing today? We spent the weekend and last couple days without internet but I’m happy to report that it has made a triumphant return. We joked that we were living in prairie times. Luckily we had DVD’s for entertainment and a library to schlep to in order to get some work done. It’s funny how reliant we become on this one little thing. I felt like a whiny child who got a toy taken away! Something to think about. I’ve always harbored a slight desire to institute a technology-free weekend once a month. Now I feel it’s a must! Could I even do it? Could you? Anywho, since we aren’t there yet, enjoy these links brought to you by TECHNOLOGY…

What are you up to this week? Last night, Chet and I were on a walk and got caught in a wild rainstorm. Those dark clouds can go from 0 to 100 down here in South Florida. Geeze Louise. Hoping for better weather this weekend so we can go on a Pokemon capturing adventure on FIU’s campus! Oh, I’ve also started a Finding Delight newsletter. (The first one went out last Friday!) They’re so much fun to create. I’d love if you’d SUBSCRIBE. You’ll receive an email on Fridays with links, videos, quotes, and MORE!
