mid-week round-up

What are you up to this week? As I mentioned in this post, things are slowing down for a few weeks around these parts. I’ll happily take the opportunity to watch the new season of Orange Is The New Black and read this book. If you’re in need of some entertainment of your own, may I recommend the following links…

The internet is where we share — and steal — the best ideas.

I’ve been listened to the podcast At Home With and the episode with By Terry founder, Terry De Gunzburg made me want to go out and by this and this.

Y’all know I love commitment.

An update.

elitist llama

Oh my golly, you guys! I haven’t posted in FOREVER and I certainly apologize for my absence around these parts. Elitist llama up there doesn’t look too kindly on bloggers who ignore their blogs!

Whilst M.I.A., Chet and I went on a week’s vacation to Louisiana. We got to visit with his family, eat a bunch of delicious food, and mosy around the great outdoors with out the oven-like temperatures of South Florida. We also managed to sneak in a little time in New Orleans where we BBQ’d with friends, enjoyed daquiris, and walked around the sweet neighborhood streets. (Have I mentioned how much I want to move to NOLA these days???) All in all, we had a BLAST!

Book-ending our trip out of town has been a LOT of work to be done by yours truly…accounting for the other half of my radio silence. Hopefully I’m on the return path to a balanced WORK – BLOG – LIFE flow. Well, at least for next few weeks! I’m off to Kentucky for two weeks in July and I might be too busy visiting with my Mama and shaping the mind’s of America’s youth to drop any lengthy content. (I’m teaching at a speech & debate camp!) But I’ll try to post updates/fun stuff here and there.

STAY TUNED!

P.S. Check out my FAVES PAGE for a list of my current favorite things. I plan to update regularly…in case you care about my faves…which you should.

Magical Underwear!?

ex officio underwear magical

Do you have a certain type of underwear you swear by? I used to always buy those cheapy-cheap 6-packs of Hanes and call it a day. (Oftentimes purchasing a new pack when I didn’t feel like schlepping to the laundromat. *doh!*) And lately I’m committed to the laser-cut underpants from Target. But then, on a whim, I decided to treat myself to a pair of Ex Officio and learn what all the fuss is about!

Since I’m sort of obsessed with minimalist packing (mainly as a concept but sometimes also in practice), the Ex Officio brand has been on my radar for a while. Their underwear is a nylon/spandex blend so it’s super comfortable and moisture-wicking. Plus, they’re made with a microbe shield. And for packing purposes, they’re easy to hand-wash and they air dry quickly so you only need to toss a couple pairs in your backpack for ultra-lite travel/trekking.

They’re a little more expensive than my $4 Target faves, but I think it’s totally worth having a few pairs of these magical underpants on hand. They’re my new go-to’s for working out and traveling!

Now I want to try MORE magical Ex Officio items like this lightweight hoodie with insect shield (for future Everglades trips perhaps?) and a sleeveless blouse.

What kind of underwear do you like? Do you have a recommendation for travel/adventure friendly clothing brands? Have you ever tried Ex Officio?

P.S. If it’s a comfy bra you’re after, I recommend THIS ONE.

How to Make Your Own Fitness Challenge

how to make your own fitness challenge

Today marks DAY 5 of my 10-Day Ballet Challenge and I’m LOVING it! Ballet is exercise that I enjoy, and although it’s a work-out it doesn’t feel like work in the same way that some exercise does. And as someone who easily succumbs to decision fatigue, I love waking up and knowing my work-out for the day is already sorted.

So, maybe you’re not so keen on living out your ballerina dreams but still find the idea of an at-home fitness challenge a little bit alluring. I’m here to help! (TBH, planning is half the fun of these things!) Below are the steps I followed to make my very own fitness challenge and YOU CAN TOO…

Decide on the length of your challenge.

I love yoga too much to spend too many days away from my mat. I decided on 10 days sort of at random. If you get bored easily or are just looking for a way to mix up your routine, a week or two is a great time-frame. Of course, I LOVE the 30 day yoga challenges I’ve completed so you could always just go for it!

Choose the type(s) of work-outs and exercise you’d like to include.

I chose ballet because it’s a work-out I love but I only incorporate it into my normal work-out regimen a few times a month. I wanted to challenge myself to more. Maybe you have something similar in mind. If not, think about the types of work-outs you enjoy. Pilates, HIIT, Hip-Hop, Cross Fit? And you could totally go for more than one type! Perhaps you want to cook up a Tabata/Theraband Challenge. Go for it!

Head to the internet for free resources.

Jump on YouTube, Pinterest, or your favorite fitness blogs for work-outs and inspiration. Watch entire videos to make sure they’re a good fit for your fitness level and preferences. Save your favorites! When else can you watch a ton of fitness videos without feeling guilty for not following along?

Create a list of all your work-outs.

Combine everything you found with any existing favorites and make a master list of all the work-outs you want to complete on your challenge! Note: You don’t have to have a work-out video for every day of the challenge. One day might include a 5-mile jog or a circuit of body-weight exercises. Just make sure to include those on the master list too!

Arrange the work-outs within your designated time frame.

This part is like a puzzle! For my 10-day challenge, I took my 2 longest work-outs and put them on Days 5 and 10. Spread out your harder challenges–placing them at the end of the week or every 5 days or however you see fit! Then arrange your other work-outs as a lead up to the more challenging days. Make sure you take note if the work-out is focusing on one part of the body. You might not want to work out arms three days in a row! If your challenge is longer than 10 days, consider incorporating a rest day or an active rest day. (Exp. 21-Day Aerobics Challenge might include “go for a walk” on days 7, 14, and 21.)

Announce your intentions.

Accountability! I feel like I’m way more likely to finish out my ballet challenge because I blogged about it. You might be the same. Let some people know what you’re up to, either IRL or on social media, so you follow through.

Keep a Fitness Challenge Diary.

This is a new aspect I’m trying out and so far I’ve found it helpful. You can record your progress, how you got on with certain work-outs, and what’s working and what’s not. Great to have on hand when you create your NEXT fitness challenge. 😉

Celebrate your success!!!

Completing a goal you set for yourself is the best feeling! Why not reward yourself? Need some inspiration? I love this list — 23 Ways to Treat Yo’Self Without Buying or Eating Anything.

Have you ever completed a fitness challenge? Would you consider creating your own? What types of exercise and work-outs would you include? I’d love to know!!!

mid-week round-up

What’s up, buttercups? I haven’t been feeling too well the last couple of days. I wouldn’t go so far as to say I’m sick, (I NEVER get sick..so THERE!) but allergies and hormones are kicking my ass. Hopefully on the mend soon! Also, we finished the second season of Master of None. Have you seen it yet? SO. GOOD. (I loved the Thanksgiving episode especially.) I hope you have a wonderful rest of your week, and here are a few links to celebrate the mid-week…

May Unboxed: Beauty Box 5

Beauty Box 5 May 2017

Hi friends! I recently received my fourth box from Beauty Box 5 and would love to share the contents, if you’re game. In case you missed previous posts, Beauty Box 5 is a subscription service that sends 5 new beauty products straight to your doorstep each month.

The boxes are $12/month ($10 if you order quarterly and $9 if you pay for the whole year!) and are guaranteed to include at least $35 of product. The brands are a mix of drugstore tried & trues, innovative indie, and deluxe…and so far the majority of products included are full size. Oh, and did I mention FREE SHIPPING on U.S. subscriptions? Ka-ching!

Here’s everything that was included in the May box! 5 out of 5 of the products were full size (+ a mini bonus item!) for a total retail value of about  fifty buckaroos. Let’s take a look…

24 Hour Liquid Lipstick in RIOJA from Cougar Beauty (Retail: $12.99)

This is the perfect color to dress up a little black dress or a crisp white shirt tucked into jeans. The formula is long lasting and it smells amazing! The perfect addition to any date-night look.

Exfoliating Body Scrubber from Daily Concepts (Retail: $5.00)

This scrubber is a great addition to my once-a-week skin exfoliating routine. It buffs away roughness and cleanses deeply with dual textures. And I love that there’s a label that fades when it’s time to replace.

Jumbo Eye & Lip Pencil in GOLD from Nanacoco (Retail: $5.50)

Not sure I’m brave enough to incorporate a gold top-coat on my lips, but I love using metallics on my eyes (especially in summer)! This gold hue can be used as a shadow or on the waterline as a liner.

Bare Necessities Highlighting Pencil from Jelly Pong Pong (Retail: $17.95)

I’m excited to use this product on the inner and outer corners of my eye to make myself look a little more awake (<- sleepy morning hack FTW!).

Mongongo Lip Conditioner from Jersey Shore Cosmetics (Retail: $10.00)

Chapstick is a beach bag ESSENTIAL. And this one smells like coconuts! Perfect. I love the all natural ingredients in this lip conditioner, but I would love it a bit more with the addition of some SPF.

BONUS: Arnica Salve from De La Cruz

I wasn’t expecting a sixth item at all! Arnica Salve can be used for relief of bruises, minor burns, chapped skin and simple scratches. I wonder how it would do on mosquito bite scars? I’ll give it a go!

For sneak peeks and monthly product info, follow Beauty Box 5 on Instagram.

Overall, I love that Beauty Box 5 includes everyday essentials – like the exfoliating body scrubber and lip conditioner – alongside special occasion makeup. Which product would you be most excited to try out? Do you have a favorite makeup subscription service? I would totally recommend Beauty Box 5 (even if you’re product clueless like me!).

Photo Diary: Everglades Adventure

Chet and I went on a day-trip adventure into the everglades last week! On a whim, we decided to drive from our apartment in Miami to Everglades City and stop at anything that looked cool along the way. The drive is just under 2 hours and takes you through Everglades National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve, and protected land of the Miccosukee Tribe.

Below you’ll find pictures from the stops we took to and fro’ Everglades City. Above is an alligator just chilling on the side of the road. As they do.

Note: I didn’t snap any pics in Everglades City because the mosquitoes were HORRIBLE. We mostly toured from the comfort of the car. However, the town is ADORABLE and we had a delicious lunch HERE. I had a crab cake sandwich because a sign in the little town square told me that Everglades City is the stone crab capital of the world! It did not disappoint.

Hiking in South Florida? That’s right! We stopped at the Oasis Visitor Center in Big Cypress National Preserve and found it marks the Southern Terminus of the Florida Trail. It is one of the 11 National Scenic Trails in the U.S. (the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail are others) and runs from down here in the Everglades all the way to Fort Pickens in Pensacola Beach, FL. (About 1,100 miles.) Now I really want to thru-hike it!

The Miccosukee Indian Village had a surprising amount of tourists about for a random weekday morning. We perused the gift shop and checked out some of the attractions. (Still not sure how I feel about the dude in jorts below.) Curious for a non-touristy look into reservation life, we also went on a walk through an adjoining neighborhood. (No pictures out of respect for the real lives and real homes we encountered.) Needless to say it was an interesting wander and I’d love to learn more about this tribe.

We also stumbled upon THE SMALLEST POST OFFICE IN AMERICA! Apparently, the Ochopee post mark is much sought-after. People travel to this tiny office to mail themselves a card just to get the mark. Wish I’d known to bring along a post card!

Bugs! L: The size of my index finger. R: The size of my whole hand. Everglades wildlife ain’t playin’ around.

Unfortunately Joanie’s Blue Crab Cafe, which was literally just chillin’ in the middle of nowhere, was closed for the day. But how fun does it look?! I really think this place is worthy of a return trip!

One thing you should know about me — I WILL stop a car to explore an abandoned building. RIP Everglades Kayak Tours.

Another nature center (not sure if it was on preserve land or the national park) with tons of info about wildlife and the history of the everglades. Below are a couple pictures taken on the back deck outside the center. They had this book for sale which I’m still kicking myself for not buying. Note the tannins in the water. (They make it look like sweet tea!)

Have you ever been in this part of Florida? What did you think? I already want to go back! (And retire to Everglades City…but maybe just in the winter because I’m a wuss about mosquitoes.)

My 10-Day Ballet Challenge

10 day FREE ballet challenge

I’m so excited to share this workout challenge with you guys! I’ve LOVED participating in various 30-day yoga challenges over the last couple years. I thought it might be fun to make a challenge of my own (using free online workouts of course) for another type of exercise I quite enjoy — BALLET!

It might sound strange, but those yoga challenges bring me a lot of joy.
a) I don’t have to think about what workout to complete on any given day.
b) Committing to something for a specified period of time, even to myself, means I’m way more likely to follow through.
c) The results are usually pretty nice.
d) I love that yummy feeling you get after completing a challenge you set for yourself.

With those 4 joy-inducing items in mind, I added a 10-day ballet challenge to my FIND MORE DELIGHT LIST. And Monday I’m kicking things off!

Here’s how things will shake down if you’re interested (or if you feel like tackling a ballet challenge of your own!!! plz dooo!)…

Hey peeps! How have you been? Last week I took an adventure into the Everglades (tell ya more about it later this week!) and managed to get a trillion bug bites. And the last couple days I’ve been in full blown allergy mode so I’m basically itchy and sneezy. Wonderful, eh? Hope y’all are faring better as we slide into Summer, and here are a few links…
